Hi, I've been living in Summerlin for 16 years now. Even though is one of the safest communities in Las Vegas, robberies have been occurring here lately. I don't know the reason behind it, but we need to stop it. Anyone have ideas or tips on what to do to avoid robberies or how fix this by contacting a Neighborhood Watch or Patrol?

Robberies seem to occur in areas where folks have something to steal....whereas shootings seem to occur MORE often then not in areas where there is nothing left to lose...

I would suspect the increase in population is the number one reason why there is an increase in robberies. dynimagelv is correct, thieves are going where the valuables are. While there is nothing you can do to make your area completly thief free, there are steps you can take to make your place less of a target.

Try contacting the local police dept for your area and see if there is a neighborhood watch in your area or info on how to start one. Also, search the internet for tips on how make your house less vulnerable.

I am curious what part of Summerlin existed 16 years ago? Vegas is a fairly large metro area with more than its fair share of substance abusers facing the poverty that often accompanies addiction. Yes, increasing population is a factor however I think its more the irresponsible anti social way many choose to lead their lives once here that is the bigger factor.

You may want to discuss matters with your HOA (assuming you have one). I know that some residents endless complaints have resulted in roaming 24 hour security patrols (paid for by the HOA) where before there were none. If you decide to approach your board on this it would be helpful to find some other concerned residents to voice their concerns and complaints as well.

I know some areas of Summerlin were built out in the early '90s. It's rather neat to go through the older sections... tons of large trees. I'm drawing a blank on roads, and I'm a relative newbie, but I'm sure someone else can give you the exact areas that were built out first.

When I moved to Las Vegas in 1994 (14 years ago) Summerlin was already underway. Summerlin Parkway only ran to Town Center, where the big Summerlin Welcome Center was, and the first villages were already underway. The Hills and The Pueblo were started first off of Rampart, as was Sun City. At that time it was a pretty quaint little community, whereas now it's just massive. I remember putting pools in at model homes out in The Trails, and driving down the dirt roads to get to the developments- they were building model homes faster than the roads could get put in. I'd get directions from the salepeople like "take Hillpointe until it ends, and keep going straight down the dirt road. Turn left at the second water main trench, and go until you see the spray-painted plywood sign with the development name on it"- it was quite the adventure back then.......lol.

You're right Bob, The Pueblo, Hills and especially Sun City Summerlin were the very first developments in Summerlin, as early as 1990. Summerlin Parkway, having just been constructed ended and dumped you out at Town Center, with a stop sign one way and that was it...Town Center Dr, to the south, ended at Charleston...with a stop sign one way and that was it.

Summerlin Hospital wasn't there, no post office, no stores along Village Center Drive, no library...NOTHING...but vast empty desert.

And look at it now...amazing!

Thanks for the info. I've only been here for about 9 1/2 years and even in that period of time the development has been unreal. I was curious as to which areas were built out first.

Before 1990...early Sun City and Summerlin goes back to 1988 and 89. I believe Summerlin on both sides of Rampart were begun in that same time frame. Puelblo was built out by the mid 90s.

Probably 1500 homes in Sun City before 1990.

The interesting thing about Summerlin is that it is only half built.

The Lakes also started in the late 80's. The complex I used to live in was built in 1988. It would have been nice to see it brand new.
