First just a little bit of background: I live in the Seattle metro area, I’m single, 54, divorced, all three daughters are raised - out of the house and married living across the state (5 hour drive or one hour flight). I work in Sales and support a 12 state region in the Western US and make fairly good money so finding a new job is not required or desired.
Mostly, I travel to one of the following cities once every two weeks otherwise I work from home: Salt Lake City, Denver, Phoenix, LA, and the Bay Area from Seattle. I can live anywhere I want in the West but I need a good airport and infrastructure for having a decent work-life balance. I also need to be near a large metro area for job security in case the economy takes a dump with me in it. LV is in striking distance of LA and the Bay area for that consideration.
I want a lower cost of living than Seattle Metro where rents and house prices are high. In my spare time, I Fly Fish (won’t be doing that in LV) and ride a Harley, among other things. I also own a few guns. I have really no desire to move to an area that has snow, higher cost of living or that hates gun owners.
Having lived in Seattle since 1994 (grew up in the Bay Area) and now single with no dog, cat, wife or girlfriend, I’m ready for a change. I’m fed up with the weather here and the 6 month winter. Yes, I could go on and on about all the wonderful things about Western Washington which there are many but, I want some vitamin D in the form of Sun, a place where the cost of living is lower so I can save some money, and a place where the housing is affordable and where a 54 year old can have a good single life.
So far, my list is down to Las Vegas and Phoenix with preference to Las Vegas for a variety of reasons (by the way, I don’t gamble so that’s not the reason I would consider LV). In LV it’s a fairly short flight to the other cities I normally travel too. California is out of consideration. Yes, I’m 54 not 24 so for me it’s important to stay active and engaged in my off time but at the same time, I’m not going to be clubbing every Friday and Saturday night but, having said that, I like the night life as well from time to time. I tend to date women with that range from 38-53 and LV appears to have that demographic in sufficient numbers to share a coffee with if nothing else.
I’m interested to hear from anyone who’s been in my position and moved to LV (or Phoenix) and what their opinion is or experience has been. Would you recommend it or not? If, your opinion is that you’d be crazy to move to LV as a single 54 year old, I’m open to hearing that as well and why. Thanks.

I'm usually long winded so I'll try to make this short...Albuquerque, New Mexico, would probably be a better fit for your lifestyle. It has all those things that you are looking for and more with one only slightly negative...it snows now and then. Not often, but sometimes. The weather is mild in summer and beautiful all year round. Much nicer (and cooler) weather than either Las Vegas or Phoenix. World class fly fishing. World class hiking/back packing. More history, art, and culture, and cultural activities than Nevada and Arizona put together. Good airport, easy in-out access with direct flights to all major cities. Although they do have some nice casinos, when you take away the Strip factor there is actually much more to do in Albuquerque, and more people to do it with...more social I mean. Much more of a social atmosphere than Las Vegas for a single guy. While it has been a long time since I was "available", those times I have been single in Las Vegas I found it to be very difficult for a single guy, and single friends tell me the same thing is true for them. It is hard to meet new people in Las Vegas. And the food in all of New Mexico is "to die for" as they say. They don't allow any bad restaurants there. Hard to find any negatives about Albuquerque; but, I admit I have had a problem with some people, like an ex-wife and her family, and some former employees and co-workers, but mostly the people are pretty normal and even the nut cases are friendly. Also, it's an easy drive to Phoenix and Denver if you ever want to take your car. Albuquerque - Albuquerque New Mexico - Albuquerque NM

Comeon Buzz. Albuquerque has winter...more than Seattle...and a second tier airport...15% the traffic of Las Vegas or Phoenix. Not a place where you go if you are airplane dependent.

Las Vegas is cooler and drier. That is nice in the summer not nice in the winter. Housing prices are similar. Phoenix prices look better but only due to a much older housing stock. Compare similar ages/neighborhoods and they are about the same. Some very good buys in Las Vegas from the foreclosures burning off. Phoenix may be the same but I do not follow it that close.

I am skeptical that there is any significant difference in the single life between the two. The strip and downtown are "industry" pretty much as far as locals are concerned. But I will leave that to the singles on the list.

Albuquerque has more snow than Seattle?

Cap'n, did you hit your head?

Avalanche danger closes 72 miles of Interstate 90 - Seattle - MSNBC.com (broken link)

I agree that Vegas offers more opportunities for singles to have fun than does Phoenix and is more centralized.

I blew that one. But not over Seattle. Seattle gets very little snow. 11 inches a year or less. But I was wrong about Albuquerque which gets less than that.

Phoenix owns the edge in the Sports dept. They are hosting the Super Bowl this week as well.

Wanna go? (broken link)

Spoken like a true LAS VEGAS realtor (not that there's anything wrong with that). Did you ever live in Albuquerque olecapt? I did. Have you been over there looking at new homes and watching the market effects on your old home for the past several years? I have. Have you recently put ernest money on a new home comparable to the one I live in now? I have (and you know how nice it is even if you don't like SW style). Have you ever depended on the ALB airport for business and pleasure? I have for over 30 years now. Look at the cities he flies to; they are a short hop from ALB. Traffic is not always the best in Albuquerque, but traffic everywhere is bad. Try getting around in little Morgantown, WV, even on a non-game day. Game day you might as well walk. Lastly, I can't believe you meant to say Las Vegas is cooler and dryer than Albuq. Where we get 4 inches of rain in a year, they get 8 in. and their summer highs seldom go above 90º. Albuquerque is high desert. It's a mile high city just like Denver but nowhere near as cold. I think the highest temp I ever saw was 102º. What cold they have comes in short spurts.

NOW, by god, he's moving to Albuquerque!!! And that's the end of the discussion!!

I think he meant that Las Vegas was cooler and drier than Phoenix, which was what the OP wanted to compare. Albuquerque was a write-in candidate!

Saturday, the UNM Lobos play the UNLV Rebels at the Mack. How about the OP moves to whichever school wins the game. Take a chance!

Yeah....That's it! That's the ticket! He was thinking of the one in New Mexico! Where he lived for ten years and thought he was in Nevada. He'd never lie and that's the truth.
