LV is a rough city? How?
Is it the heat or the crime that drives people out of LV?
Why do people come there, stay a year and leave? I don't get it, but then, I am from 22 years in humid, godawfulhot Houston.

Over the years, I've met a few of those "move and leavers." Here's what I gathered from some of them. They come and leave because some of them had been here on "vacation" and enjoyed themselves so much, they want to have that "life" all the time even if they couldn't afford it and/or had so many problems originally, before they moved here, and then became disillusioned with Las Vegas when moving here didn't solve those problems.

Or, they wanted to have the same circumstances as those who they might know who already live here and are quite happy; when in fact, they can't have the same circumstances, like not being qualified for good paying jobs, can't afford to buy a home here, etc.

Poor planning, not realistic expectations (Las Vegas is Nirvana and all your problems will be gone once you move here), no money, no research on the area, no good paying job, no family here (and you miss them so much!) and just plain stupidity (in some cases) are what make people move here and then leave.

EVERYBODY loves Las Vegas and everyone wants to know what goes on here. Its the ultimate "feel good" place, but a city and valley with all the problems of any typical big city/population area. Sometimes..it's simply just "too big a place" for some folks to handle.

Most of the "in and out movers" don't realize these things ..

Personally I think that is a myth...or wishful thinking. If so many are leaving how come it has grown by leaps and bounds from about 400,000, 20 years ago, to 2 million today? How many towns have had that happen, and how many have actually lost huge numbers of people?

We used to joke when someone we knew left town that they would be back in six months because usually they were. What I think happens is that lots of people start to miss "back home" after 6 months to a year, and yearn to go back. When they do, they realize even more that all the reasons they wanted to leave home in the first place are still valid, and that now that they have actually lived in Las Vegas, they know there is nothing to compare to Las Vegas, so many of them return.

I don't have any stats to prove it other than what I've personally experienced over the years, but I'd bet on it.

I was wondering if it was the high crime rate, but guess not.
The heat is one answer I got often when I asked friends from there.
Interesting.....
I agree with the unrealistic expectations...and not having the skills for LV that translate to $$.

Very perceptive MomMom. Ya know, the main reason for failure of any new venture is failure to do the research first. Or ignoring the research because it doesn't fit with one's preconceived notions.

There actually really aren't that many people who move in and out.
There are some, sure, but our overall population is pretty long-term.

I just moved here, it was because of job transfer. My husband's parents moved out 9 months before due to job transfer. I read somewhere that 5,000 people move to Las Vegas a month. Not sure if that is accurate or not.

Who knows why people leave, job transfers! lol

Default Transiency is an urban myth.

I been working this one for about the last six months. From every reference I can find Las Vegas grows fast but turns over at normal rates. Some have countered that we move a lot internal to Las Vegas. I can find no proof of this either.

So all old wife's tale until someone comes up with some real data.

When you hear or see it on the news complain. I am reasonably sure that no data supports high transiency. So tell em BS.

It has been my experience that about 20% of the new arrivals leave in a year or two...almost always due to the heat. If you are from some place hot it is not an issue. But Milwaukee? Minneapolis? Jersey? They find the summers too oppresive and go home.

We have had anywhere from 4,000 to 7,000 new people per month for the last 20 years. Some of them leave and some people like to use that to "prove" that this is a bad place to live. Actually there is probably no better place to live.

All someone has to do is log onto the US Census Bureau website and see the figures there for the last few censuses conducted. That's why media sources quote those figures. They're not numbers someone arbitrarily thought might sound good

I agree with you Buzz, people will try and rectify their own failures with that "and just as many move out" crap all the time. The LV Valley wouldn't have swelled to over 2 million people if that reasoning were true.

I also agree with you, there IS no better to place live!
