I completely agree with you. And it's one of the reason I dislike this place. It's always quantity over quality with the herd that visits here and the herd that lives here. As usual for me, it's all about the signal-to-noise ratio. And much of what happens here is essentially "noise."

And if you can find it, find a complete copy of Martin, Sinatra and Davis playing the Sands in the early 1960s. Some of their stage banter would be considered cutting edge in 2015, let alone 1962.

Here's part one. You'll have to click the other links to see the rest...

There are CDs available with MUCH better audio quality. I listen to these CDs often when I commute.

I prefer the old Mirage volcano, because, you know, it looked like a volcano.

I really liked the Boardwalk, as well. I could take or leave anything else. At this point, I'd prefer them to start tearing things down, and rebuilding. I could use the steady work and overtime.

Also, the rat pack are extremely overrated, especially Sinatra.

Actually if Sands or Dunes were still here, they would be the least popular casinos on the Strip with the least revenue and profit. Newer casinos outperform older casinos by a significant margin in both revenue and profit. Not to mention the Dunes was replaced by Bellagio, which is the 2nd most profitable casino on the Strip after Wynn.

The reason why older casinos are imploded and replaced by newer ones is because it's very profitable to do so. Even after spending billions for that new casino. Tourists speak with their money and their money says that they prefer newer modern casinos to old outdated ones.

Vegas seems to think that its past is disposable. It's a shame, because it has one of the most interesting histories of any city in this country.
Holding onto the past too much prevents you from moving forward.

Love the newer modern buildings on the Strip. I have seen the older hotels around town 30 years ago. Purely for comparison and value for the visitors spending their money here, the newer properties offer way more.

I have seen the Landmark, the Dunes, Desert Inn, Hacienda, Sands, El Cortez, Alladin, Lady Luck in the past but I prefer the City Center/Aria/Cosmopolitan/Vdara/Mandalay Bay/Delano/Cromwell/SLS/Downtown Grand....... love all these properties. Las Vegas is a destination that people keeps on visiting because it evolves, there is always something new and different for the people coming for a vacation.

You have a point about that. I know so many people who visit LV when there's a new property to explore. They're curious because they know the ante is always being upped. We all have our favorite things, and nostalgia has value in our lives, but Vegas is based on concept of bigger is better and newer is usually synonymous with "more fabulous." People the world over like that.

I'm young enough to not know the "old" Vegas but old enough that my first trip was toward the end of the "family-friendly" experiment, when Luxor still had an Egyptian theme but the Wizard of Oz had disappeared from MGM Grand. I'm on the fence as well. I loved Vegas in the 90s and early 2000s because it really was like a Disneyland for grown-ups. I liked all the theming and it was so fun to go resort hopping to explore. Much of the resorts now seem the same. There's little reason to go take a peek, nothing to really lure you in. I miss the Arabian themed shopping mall in the old Aladdin. I miss walking through the King Tut's tomb recreation. I miss the battle of pirates and British instead of pirates and scantily-clad women.

That said, those aren't exactly things that would keep me coming back over and over. Theme parks and museums know that you have to update and change. Old rides get replaced with new ones. Old exhibits go away and new ones come in. Otherwise people will stop coming eventually. At least Vegas seems to understand that as well. The new wave of Vegas is not going to prevent me from coming in the least (that job belongs to my wife. ).

Whoosh!

(That was the point traveling at supersonic speed over your head.)

Old Las Vegas (at least I think enough of this town to spell it properly) was the epitome of a swinging, happening spot.

Now it's corporate BS Las Vegas. The Rat Pack and the intimate club venues gave way to Corporate Epcot Las Vegas and the "wring every nickle out of every square inch of the property" business model. At some point during the 1980s, they decided they could make a lot of money off retirees and their social security checks.

This is mostly what I see when I'm on a casino floor -- on my way to a part of the resort that isn't a pointless waste of time.

A bunch of geezers huffing cigarettes and playing slot machines like a bunch of zombies. At least in this stock photo, the geezer in question is wearing tasteful (but last-century) clothes. Usually they look like something straight out of a "Larry the Cable Guy" video. It makes me wonder what people are thinking when they say that this is an "exciting" city, full of "action." If by "action," they mean "trailer-trash retirees blowing their pension at slot machines," then I agree completely.

At least when the mob ran things, it wasn't lame. Ever seen a slot tournament in action? The participants are basically brain dead. They're playing adult Whack-A-Mole, hitting a single button just as fast as they can. And that's what passes as "action."

The only exception I see is the pool parties and nightclubs. The kids and their techno scare off the bulk of the Geritol-set. I have a feeling that's the direction Las Vegas is heading. The resorts' older market is dying off and not being replaced.

I prefer Las Vegas' aesthetic of the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's than the present look. The resorts back then had personality. Each one was unique. Even the names of the resorts were better. Changes happen and technology is always improving and advancing quickly. Las Vegas is constantly evolving. I do enjoy my visits to Las Vegas every single time I go. I'll be in Las Vegas again next week for 3 days.
