Every culture tears down the past to make room for the modern. In Milan there was a beautiful church created in the gothic style in the fourteenth century call Santa Maria alla Scala. Four hundred years they tore it down and erected a modern building, a music hall called La Scala.

Maybe back in the day they were nice places, but the ones that I've seen didn't age well.
Yeah, it's a double-edged sword of an issue. For example, I regularly hear people complain about Circus Circus. As long as it's doing well (and it is) MGM has no reason to do a major remodel or to bring it down. But, inevitably, it'll reach that point. And, there'll be an outcry when it happens.

One of the things I like about LV is the willingness to evolve to changing needs. Remember "survival of the fittest". There will always be groups that want to sabotage evolution. If a system can't or won't evolve, then that system is doomed to die. (System's Theory) Look at Detroit, it refused to change and not evolve and now it is a dying city. This is why Vegas will remain a vibrant place. Embrace the change and not fear it.

I'm with you Bill, however, I think you have the properties reversed. Dunes became Bellagio....

If I'm nostalgic I'll take a walk downtown to the 4 queens or the El Cortez. Seeing the strip get torn down and rebuilt is exciting. Yes, when the Sahara, Stardust, and the rest closed it's a bit sad, but none of those properties give the excitement or the entertainment value as like the new properties.

I understand wanting to keep a piece of the Riviera alive because it's fresh in our minds and there is a sadness about it closing. What we forget was the morgue the Riviera turned into, how most would just pass it by, it hasn't made a headline (except about closing) for anything good in decades. You can always go visit the sign in the boneyard if you feel melancholy about the place closing or any of the old places.

I miss the Stardust and the Silver Slipper, but I'm sure the new Gentry Resorts World will be far more spectacular and I'm looking forward to visiting it.

I like a little of both, the older properties downtown and the high end 5 star strip resorts, depending on what we are looking for in a visit. The value of downtown is hard to beat but some of the weekday/off-season rates we've found at 5 star resorts on the strip are a steal compared to what you'd pay at a similar property outside of Las Vegas.

Yes. My mistake. Dunes = Bellagio. Sands = Venetian.

They made the right call, on that one.
