I worked with a guy from Denmark once. Based on what you post, you'd probably consider Denmark close to the perfect place. We had a conversation about this. The uptake was that the really driven, ambitious people were sick of floating their socialist utopia, and were coming to the US, because they could do better here.
Very valid point - thank you!

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas. Many of us on this forum could live anywhere in the world and choose to live here.

Your husband's background might allow him to find a job with one of the contractors at Nellis AFB. Those are generally good jobs that pay far more than the minimum wage.

Visiting Las Vegas and living in Las Vegas are two way different things.

Where in the uk are you from?

Coming from the UK to vegas, you'll find most things dirt cheap.

With regards to driving license stuff, I might be tempted to initially set up insurance on a british license, so the insurance company would have a record of you driving pre-US license along with pass date. From memory it wasn't much more to do it like that, and may help.

Compared to the UK electricity appears to be massively more expensive which is unfortunate as you'll use a lot of it in the summer, water and gas appear to be quite a bit cheaper.

Is there any particular reason you've picked vegas as opposed to just liking it a lot?
... So are you looking to rent your house out then 😜 how often do you stay in Vegas or visit annually?

I'd try an extended stay out here first to see if you'd actually be happy in Vegas. Rent a furnished 1 bdrm for 3 months, put your resume out there and see if you can make it work.

And is this guy from Denmark moving to America and looking for entry-level, minimum-wage jobs as a middle-aged expat?

Who is going to float these people if they need serious health care shortly after they move? Not NHS in the UK. That's for sure. Keep in mind that we pay more for every health related item -- from a dental filling to bypass surgery -- than any other developed country. Same procedures, same care. Our system simply costs more.

I don't care if wealthy Europeans get sick of paying for their socialist systems and want to move here. But they shouldn't expect Americans to float them when they need a doctor. And that's what many do -- emergency room care and then simply return home and ignore the bills. (Just like illegal aliens and the poor do as their healthcare strategy.) There's a reason why the fast-track visa into the US requires considerable funds to simply buy one's way in.

Thank you. Yes, we will rent for a period of time in the first instance and take it from there.

Excuse me Scoop - I understand your frustration with immigrants - we have the same issues at the moment in the UK. I can afford my healthcare insurance but you seem to have misunderstood what I was saying. I could of course return to the UK for my healthcare if i so wished as I have made the necessary contributions over the years to enable me to do so. Please don't be concerned for my health, I will be medically covered in both countries.

I was simply saying that I would be happy to work minimum wage to get started - I am not proud and I am a reliable and hard worker. I consider myself to have as much to give, if not more than a younger person! You appear to be anti-immigration which is sad because the U.S. Is made up of immigrants. Where did your ancestors hail from? You can do a lot worse than Middle-aged expats! I appreciate your comments and views but would point out that I don't expect the state to look after me - I have been independent all my life and always will be! I am simply acting in a sensible manner asking for real views from Vegas residents. Your input is appreciated.

Thank you. That's helpful - this is a route we also considered in addition to MCCarran. My husband won't work minimum wage - I will for my spending money 😄

I don't have a problem with immigrants. I'm married to one. I do have a problem with people who have unbelievably unrealistic expectations and then expect others to make those unbelievably unrealistic expectations work for them.

In Las Vegas:

It's hard to get a job if you're not a local.

It's hard to get a job if you're middle-aged.

It's hard to get a job if you don't have a well-established support network.

For every job at Nellis AFB, there are a dozen fresh-out-of-the-military vets who would like to have that job. For every minimum-wage sales-clerk job, there are a hundred people who would like to have that job if it's full time and may someday include benefits. Especially out of work, middle-aged locals who are paying around $1,000 per month for their healthcare plan. They're dying to get a job like that. Some of them literally.

Now re-read your opening post. What do you bring to this city other than enthusiasm and accents?
