This a definite concern. Quality of a lot of products has gone down the tube.

Furniture is tough to find. You can find cheap MDF type stuff easy but you know when you buy it won't even survive the first time you move it across the room. Even some of the expensive furniture is very poorly made.

I looked for a bedroom set for ages. Finally found one at a resale shop on Charleston. Solid wood, well put together and unbelievably heavy. It was probably new in the early 80's. All the drawers work and it still looks new. The owner said he got it at auction. My other BR set was built in the 30's. It's been back and forth across the country 3 times and it's still in great shape. I think I am going to paint it and keep it in the guest room.

I think I am going to follow Scoop's lead and make my own everything, or everything possible to make myself. I bought a corner desk, paid quite a bit for it. I love the design, and it is still working, but after moving across country, it is torn up a bit, and wobbly. I can brace it, but for the money spent, I shouldn't have to do anything to it for decades.

The wife likes furniture so I've spent my fair share of time inside various furniture stores, and I have yet to come across a single piece of wood furniture worth a crap.

We are looking for sofa(s) and recliner to start, then a dining/kitchen table. Depending on how our existing end and coffee tables work perhaps those as well.

We brought our Thomasville bedroom set with us and it will likely last us for life.

I agree... when I went to macy's to look at some furniture, I only found one set that was all hardwood and dove tail construction.

But you're looking at several thousands of dollars worth of tools to do so. That Domino is a $1,200 purchase -- and it only does one thing. Their track saw is $500. Their miter saw is $1,400. Their cordless drill is $600, for cryin' out loud.

And you're assuming people have the skills to make their own furniture without injuring themselves.

I bought my first Festool track saw because I was afraid of power saws and losing fingers. At the time, I DIYing installing hardwood flooring in an old New England house. I didn't want to feed large 4x8 plywood sheets through a table saw.

Domino joinery makes its easy for non-master craftsman like me to build tables.

Festool has a FarmTable workshop class right here in Vegas. Worth the $325 fee.

I found some interesting furniture at Colleens Consignment. They sell both new and used furniture. Some quality stuff, some not so much.
