I was in the Detroit area, Clinton Township/Warren around Thanksgiving. I met nothing but nice people everywhere we went. People were courteous and helpful when we couldn't find the gas tank opener on the rental car late at night,I asked a guy getting gas, and he happened to be black, not that race is an issue, but he and his wife were really nice and helpful.
I wasn't there long, just a few days. Sure, maybe living there isn't as fun as visiting there, although i thought, yes, i could live here and be happy enough. But my other half refuses to move back there at any cost. And besides, i like the mountains.

Seems like the OP is looking for a black town. Not going to find it here. Not like Detroit, Cleveland, Richmond, Atlanta.... those are mostly black. I could see how the OP feels out of place in Vegas.

I can't attest to how many PHA OES Chapters there are in town, since I'm F&AM. If you look in the phone book, you should be able to find some PHA lodges in town, and they can help you from that point.

I think you will find in a lot of cities with high transient or high influx of people from somewhere else, that the people are in a state of transition and probably finding much of the same issues you are.

We moved to Raleigh NC and found it hard to meet someone who had lived there for very long. Our whole neighborhood was new and setting up groups or finding them was a long process. At the end of 2 years I was well established but it was a hard two years.

Have you checked in with the local AKA's?? I am not in Vegas yet so I can't tell you where you might have luck finding them. When I get there I plan on making it a point to get to know everyone in the organizations I am a member of, I think it will be helpful.

I actually had to do a google search for what you meant by all these letter (FHA, OEM, F&AM, etc.) Surprisingly I should've known that since I think my grandfather was a member of one of those....

it seems, as aqualung said, there is only chapters of F&AM in vegas. To the OP... if there isn't a chapter of what you are looking for, why don't you consider starting one? I'm sure if you called the national offices of your particular organization, they may be able to supply you with resources that you need.

She could also start her own group on Meetup.com.

Starting a chapter of the Order of Eastern Star (Prince Hall Affiliation or Free & Accepted Mason) on Meetup.com is something that you can't do. First, you'd have to Dispensation from Nevada's Grand Chapter of OES, then a few years later, get a Charter. There are chapters here in Las Vegas.

For the OP: Go to http://phanv.org/, and send an e-mail to Gail. She's a Past Matron, and she should be able to help you. I used to be in Eastern Star when I lived in California. I'm starting to get active in Blue Lodge (about to be a dual member of Oasis Lodge #41 F&AM) this month.
