That link doesn't appear if you view the site from your phone. It just gives you the phone number to send the text to.

I am moving from out of state and I know that the registration for our 2 cars will be a bit over $1K. Is this a one time fee or does this have to be renewed (and paid again) every so often?

It's every year. The amount of governmental (and supplemental!) services tax you pay is based on the depreciated value of your car. Once the car is 9+ years old, you pay the fee based on 5.25% of its MRSP, regardless of its actual value. Used to have a bottom range of 1.75% of MRSP, but the 2009 Legislature got greedy.

Welcome to Nevada!

No you don't... You are stating that if you have a car from 2005 or older, you pay 5.25% of original msrp.... that would mean if your msrp was 20,000, you would pay $1050 a year to register it...

maybe you meant .525% My 2002 Insight msrp 19,900 cost $100 to register...

He got it exactly right. "Based on", not "is". Do you ever think, "Hmmm, that didn't sound right. Maybe I ought to reread what I just read and make sure I read it correctly?"

Well, I could have provided the full formula, but I figured that would just confuse chris623.

So, for the record, the DMV values your car at 35% of MSRP. They then depreciate that valuation based on the age of the car and based on a schedule as provided in the statute (for most cars and trucks, it's 100% new, 95% the first year, and it drops by 10% per each following year). So if you have a 10 year-old truck with an MSRP of $35,000, you end up with an original DMV valuation of $12,250. Take 15% of that (the depreciated value), and you get a current valuation of $1,837.50. Or, in other words, 35%*15% = 5.25% of MRSP. The Government Services Tax (used to be called the "privilege" tax) is 4% of that valuation, and the supplemental governmental services tax is another 1%. So 5% of $1,837.50 comes out to be around $90, plus another $33 for the basic fee, plus a couple of other things they get you on.

Or, I could have just said that the fee was based on the MSRP and the age of the car. The older and cheaper the car, the less you pay for registration. But I'm pretty sure that's exactly what I did say.
