I currently have a non-gaming work permit.
I also have a felony conviction in NJ from 8 years ago (distribution of marijuana).

I'm considering taking classes at The International School of Hospitality (TISOH) to get a diploma in hotel operations and hopefully start a new career.

My questions are
1) Can I get a hotel job (let's say front desk or reservations) with just my non-gaming card?
2) Will my felony conviction make it really difficult for me to be hired at a hotel despite my sherriff's non-gaming work permit?

We're still in this period of an excess of workers, which has spoiled too many employers, but the pendulum continually swings, and if we go to another period, like 2005, of a scarcity of workers, you'll have no problems whatsoever!

Right now, bad timing!

Why would you want to work at a hotel that has felony? How does a hotel get a felony anyway?

Minor point -- they're not "ex-felons." The felony sticks with the felon, like herpes, for life. Unless the felon can get it expunged. And even then the resort will find out about it if the position involves cash.

I would mortgage my house and bet it all that a felon isn't getting a job at the resort where I work. Why would they hire one, when they can hire any number of people who AREN'T felons?

When I was hired, the background check was the deepest I've experienced in my life. This is no mere concealed carry check. People from the elementary school I attended reached out to let me know that a Las Vegas casino was asking about me. And the most expensive thing I touch on a given day is a truffle.

And, OP, I really truly and non-sarcastically hope that you find a good job that works for you. I hate what we do to felons -- we basically demand that they go back to crime because almost nobody will hire them.

You made a mistake and you're trying to get your life in order. I hope you are successful. My advice? Go to culinary school and get a job at a restaurant that has nothing to do with a casino. Nobody cares in the kitchen as long as you can pull your weight. It's a good career path because you are less likely to be judged. I'm not saying it won't happen. It will. Just be up front and tell the chef what you did and what you've done since to turn around. And don't make excuses. Chefs hate that.

Question: "Can I work at a hotel with a felony?"

I've never run across a hotel with a felony. What hotel is that?

One other thing. I googled that school. Why would you pay all that money, when you could get the same (or better) education at College of Southern Nevada for considerably less money? CSN has culinary and hotel management courses. Most UNLV students end up taking a great deal of CSN classes in order to save money. Some of the culinary classes are ONLY available at CSN.

Find a good MLM company and go all in. Many could care less if you have a felony. If anyone says you shouldn't do it tell them to give you a job. Some people do make good money in the MLM industry. You have to do what you have to do.

That being said I hope you didn't hurt nobody.
