Hi guys,

I am wondering how the traffic would be like from LA to LV. I will be leaving Irvine, CA around late afternoon on July 3rd and coming back on Sunday around noon. I cannot leave earlier to beat the traffic. Just wondering if the traffic will be like 8+ hours long..

Thanks in advance!

Yes. And coming home on noon Sunday will probably be closer to 12+ hours. Get outta town by 6AM Sunday to avoid that mess.

Make it 3AM. Tried that last year. It was a good 6.5 hours leaving at 6am.

Have you ever seen 300 miles of bumper to bumper traffic? That's what it will be.

Try calling the California Highway Patrol & get their forecast.

I am leaving my home in California around 9PM Thursday and returning Tuesday morning. That is about the only way I have figured out to avoid holiday traffic to and from.

The only way that might work is to leave late Thurs evening probably around 10-11pm. The come back late Sun maybe around 10-11pm. I usually look at www.sigalert.com to see how the traffic it at least part of the way. I'm back and forth from Irvine too but doing this on a holiday weekend is a risk. Any little accident will cause major traffic.

Sounds like the OP is going to experience the drive of death. Until the I-15 gets widened, it'll only get worse over time. The best thing to do now is to take some vacation time off and extend your stay.

That has to be THE MOST depressing sight! Traffic at a crawl across a barren wasteland! If you can't leave earlier, leave later on Sunday coming back. Heading out of LV at 8pm would put you home before midnight. Don't forget to stop at state line to drop off any remaining dollars you have at one of the last ditch casinos.

I would never go to Vegas by car on a holiday weekend. It's just not worth it. It might be better to head over the hoover dam and down to the 40 and then a back route from Barstow down to Lucerne Valley then over to Victorville. Not seriously of course, but I always think about those things when I get in the Vegas Crawl.

leaving vegas later, like 8pm might not be the best idea. i am usually traveling TO vegas sunday evenings anywhere from 6 to 9 pm & sometimes the traffic is not exactly stopped but it sure isn't traveling at a high rate of speed either. the headlights seem to be never ending.....i would suggest leaving earlier in the morning instead, 3 am like winter-rabbit suggested.
