My husband and I are looking at several options for relocation from NW PA. Our original destination was (and maybe still is) around Hemet/Sun City/Menifee, CA. Our kids live in Anaheim/Brea area and we definitely don't want to live in that area. We retired from Riverside, CA in 2001; traveled around a lot and lived in south TX for several years until moving back to PA, where we have other family members. The weather is hard on us with the dampness and snowy, cold winters, so we need to get to a warmer, drier climate.

I'm wondering if there's any information from anyone on here that lives (lived) in these areas and could share some cost of living, crime, general living conditions with me.

We know that if we want to see our kids we're the ones that will have to travel in to Anaheim. At least we'd be closer than we are now

It's very expensive to live in CA and car registration is ridiculous (and a hassle!). Is the transition to NV easier and less expensive than moving to CA???

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

The NV DMV web site has a 'new resident' page; enter the VIN # to get a cost estimate of the license tabs. My tabs were less than $175 in Seattle and are so here as well, but I drive an older car, a 2002 Hionda. Insurance was the most worrisome for me but it only increased slightly ... from $520 to $560 for 6 months.

However what you save in housing costs and taxes makes NV exponentially less expensive. If I had to choose between living in Laughlin or over the river in Bullhead City, I would pick Laughlin, simply because it's in NV where just about everything is less expensive.

Although registration was under $100 back east from where we moved, and it was $400 or $500 here, the property tax there was figured at $48 for every $1000 our car was valued. A $10,000 car would cost $480 per year. It went down by roughly 20% per year, but still MUCH higher than here.

OP can easily calculate their cost using the DMV web site.

Yes, but no state or local income tax makes up for that.

Laughlin over Bullhead City... A big NO to Hemet - too ghetto now - Sun City is really expensive and Menifee is almost as bad...

Thanks everybody. I'll check out the DMV site

I've been doing some comparing and what I'm concerned about is my husband's pension being taxed. In PA retirement income is exempt. Not so for CA or AZ. I have to check on NV next.

I think we're scraping CA altogether. Way too expensive. That's why we got out of there in 2001 when my husband retired.

NV has no income taxes! Your pension would be tax free.
