The taxes in Cali are prohibitive compared to here.

Medical care will be greater in CA, if you need it. You will not find good medical care in Laughlin/Bullhead. Plus, Laughlin/Bullhead is 4 hours from your family in Anaheim. If I were you, I would look into Corona or Lake Elsinore, CA. Those are good areas for retirees, close to the Temecula wineries, close to San Diego and Orange County, close to good medical care facilities. If you want desert living, then try the Coachella Valley and Palm Springs, or the high desert north of Los Angeles such as Rancho Vista, Acton or Quartz Hill just outside of Palmdale.

Did they eliminate the high taxes in those areas?

There may be higher taxes, but the quality of life is also exponentially higher. You don't have to breathe in cigarette smoke everywhere you go. The schools are better and higher ranking, there are great universities nearby that support cutting-edge research in medicine and technology, you're a short drive from the ocean and almost every place I mentioned, save Palm Springs, gets a marine influence.

Yes, you can pay less taxes, but then you have to expect lower-quality education in the schools and lower-level quality of health care.

OP asked: "Is the transition to NV easier and less expensive than moving to CA???"

The answer is yes.

i don't think people looking to move to the laughlin/bullhead area are going to be all too concerned about the quality of their healthcare.

As a homeowner in Desert Foothills Estate next to Laughlin Ranch, I love Bullhead City living. We looked at both sides of the river and just liked BHC better with Laughlin Ranch and Desert Foothills Estates. The current prices on homes is really good and can homes with a golf course or Laughlin casino & river view at a fair price. The clubhouse is really nice, beautiful golf courses and you're 5 min from shopping, casinos and the river.

If I was going to live on the NV side, I'd probably pick Las Vegas. You can live on the west side like Summerlin & Red Rock areas with upscale communities, Red Rock national park, golfing and local casinos. When you want to have fun and see a popular entertainer, Broadway musical or enjoy dining on the strip, it's 15 minutes away. The cost of living there is so cheap in terms of housing cost, HOA and daily expenses. We have a home there too and it's hard to leave after a few days. Just a cool place to live and I wish we could live there full time. (We live in CA) The only thing about Laughlin, Bullhead and Vegas is they are 4 hours away from your family. If you stop to have lunch, it's a 5 hour trip. If you visit often, the drive will get old and the fuel cost will be high. To solve that problem I think other posters suggestion of Palm Springs is a good one!

Palm Springs, Palm Desert and Ranch Mirage have a lot to offer. You can live near downtown or better yet right on a golf course with a view for under 250K for 2 bed, 2 bath + 2 car garage condo with a view. Yes, they have $300-470 HOA's, but you're getting a lot for your money. Beautiful gated communities, impressive main gates with waterfalls, towering palm trees and 24/7 guards greeting you as you come home. You drive past rolling hills of a beautiful golf course, fountains and perfectly manicured landscaping to your house. You pull into your garage and go inside your home that has mountain views, course lake and golf course views. You drive down to the clubhouse and dine at the restaurant, attend one of their many social events, workout in the private member gym, play tennis or swim one of the many pools and relax in the spa. To me, that makes the HOA totally worth it. Tons of celebrities live out there and it just has that wonderful nostalgic charm. You've got some great choices and Laughlin NV, Bullhead City, Las Vegas and even Palm Springs has their plus and minuses. I wish you the best on your choice!

The majority of my friends here in Las Vegas are transplants who could no longer afford the high costs of living in Ca. Property taxes are out of sight, the cost of housing is insane, HOA's are sky high, gasoline for your car is way more expensive and utilities are really high. Most of my friends are formerly from the San Diego and LA area. I myself, have been to Riverside and Hemet and when I refer to them, they tell me they are bad areas and I should not think of them as the norm for California.

Laughlin and Bullhead is also not considered that desirable, compared to Las Vegas. The cities are both lower and therefore the summer temps are always higher than ours. You can get very sick of day after day of 110 plus.

Having previously lived in Ohio, the cost of living in Las Vegas is much lower. Other than for car insurance and registration. Our utilities are quite reasonable, property taxes are less than 1% of assessed value, food costs are high everywhere in this country but here, there are so many coupon situations available one can get some great discounts. And yes, we are the entertainment capital of the world but seriously, locals rarely can afford the price of tickets to see these people. Talking Elton John, Barbra Streisand, Celine, Rod Stewart; two people could easily go through $600 for a few hours and not have the best of seats.

Being retired myself, without a doubt, Las Vegas is the best of all cities mentioned. Let the kids come to you. Who wouldn't want to visit Las Vegas? And if they don't want to come, oh well....... they're grown up now and life goes on.
