Since so few folks post follow ups of their moves I thought I would post one for those thinking of moving here.

Found a house to lease nice area in the "dreaded " North las vegas 89031, we are minutes from a park and N of Craig. You really can see the difference once you get south of Craig !

Found a job and passed the drug test and background. Started work one month to the day for starting my search.

Bought some real nice furniture on craigslist and we are loving it so far.

I get asked that a lot

Many years in the casino/ customer service biz.
Willing to take a job that may not pay well but has room to move up, as I expect to "pay my dues" to break into the Vegas employment scene.
I am doing pretty much exactly what I had been doing back in MN.

I applied for EVERYTHING I could find, including Pizza delivery. Had 5 or 6 interviews offered and went to everyone on them to "practice" my interview skills even if it was not a dream job.
Showed up in suit for every interview except the pizza gig.

Got offered a full time gig and GRABBED it!!

LOTS of part time jobs out here ...but you better have some cash back up or additional income!!!!!
Even my full time Job would not cover my monthly but I can hope to move up quickly

Also I was told outright that having been with my last employer 12 years was damn impressive.
I was even asked at one interview was that a 1 or a 7 for the year of hire at my last employer.

Since I started my job I have been called for and turned down 2 or 3 that were either part time or temp in nature. Including a pizza delivery gig.

I can put in for transfer in 3 months

You reiterated my point since I moved here. Jobs are EASY to get if you have the work ethic and are willing to hustle. People ***** and moan about how they can't find a job, yet I know no unemployed people (the last friend of mine finally got a job after 2 months because he was holding out for THE job, not A job). If you aren't working, and are able and willing to work, that's on you, not the job market.

Glad to hear that things have gone well for you! It gives me hope! We put our house on the market again so hopefully it will sell within the next few months.

Hell yeah.

I coach people to get any job. So far I am 8/8. And this is not my real job.

Here are my guidelines:

- The interview is about finding out whether the job is a good fit for YOU, rather than the typical standpoint of whether you can fudge your answers/resume to get the job
- Be honest and admit you don't know the answers
- Be humble and admit you have a lot to learn from your future superiors
- Take a deep breath and give yourself 2-5 seconds before you answer a tough question
- Incorporate your strengths into each answer and use concrete examples from your experience to fortify your response
- Be prepared by learning/reading up about the business/industry and ASK GOOD QUESTIONS
- Always write a cover letter:
----- be concise
----- don't repeat stuff on your resume
----- put focus on situations and past experiences that makes you a COMPETENT candidate for the responsibilities of the job
----- DO NOT USE any generic cover letter garbage
- If possible, use a reference from current or past job (shows you are leaving on good terms)

I somewhat agree, but also feel like it's a combination of work ethic and luck. Case in point: I came out here 2 years ago after a messy breakup and wanting a fresh start. I had no job lined up or prospects and had worked at my previous job for over 5 years so had no recent job interview experience as well. I was prepared to wait it out for a few months as I applied for jobs, got some job interview experience, etc before landing an offer. But literally the first job I applied for called me back, brought me in for a couple interviews, and offered me a job with a decent salary.

I feel like I have a good skillset and am personable, but also caught a lucky break and happened to look for and apply for a job in my field at the right time/day too. I know people with the same skillset as I have and near same age (early 30s) who have been looking for over a year and still haven't found anything.

I have talked to alot of people who have recently moved here and all of
them are working. They may not have the highest paid jobs but they have jobs.

Could be a second wage earner too with their spouse also bringing in a paycheck.

Welcome to 89031! I moved to the same zip code in June 2011 and absolutely love my house and living in Las Vegas valley! I do not like how foolish the city of North Las Vegas has been spending money and giving our contracts. I almost wish the city would be shut down and my taxes go to Clark County or Las Vegas. I also wish that our schools were in better shape.

But I love the weather, the scenery, the entertainment options, retail shopping (moved from a small town), hiking and recreational activities.

I found several jobs pretty easily, but found the "right" one nearly two years ago and enjoy what I do. My neighbor's moved into his sisters house a year and 4 months ago and complains that he or his wife can't find jobs or even get interviews. Yet he won't cut his long grey hair he wears in a ponytail, or cut off his beard and mustache. He won't take the suggestions I gave him for finding a job. He does always have time and money for his daily case of beer though.

Congratulation on your new life. Don't let the neigh sayers or the Vegas haters bring you down.
