Graffiti. It's starting to be placed on a lot more places: trees, curbs, cinder block fences, etc. Is there anything we as a community can do to lessen the vandalism?

Shoot the taggers.

The only way this will get any better is if the majority of residents have some sort of community pride. That's hard to do for families that move from apartment to apartment, chasing the "free first month's rent" dragon. The more economically depressed the area, the worse it's going to be. (Capt. Obvious strikes again.)

It's quite bad in Sunrise. Paint over the graffiti, and the taggers just look at that as a new blank canvas. It would be great if they'd use that energy for something productive. But that's a complaint I have about this city in general.

It is a problem all over the country in towns big and small and can only be resolved with stiff penalties for those who do the damage. I remember a case in Philly where the judge fined the taggers community service for 6 months and directed them to paint over every graffiti painted wall, pole, building etc that was found and if it was re-tagged then they went back and repainted the damage. The taggers were the placed on 5 years of probation, some of them ended up in jail because they did not learn their lesson. To be honest it is not something that can be easily resolved because it is so prevalent and widespread and not considered something worth pursuing when there are bigger crimes and issue to deal with.

Humans have been painting on walled surfaces since the beginning of time. It's a tough crime to resolve short of caning or cutting people's hands off.

I was told by a police officer that often times graffiti is related to earning your way into or staying in or just repping your gang.

The quicker the graffiti is painted over, the member may not receive recognition or whatever for his tagging.

Sounds stupid I know, but that's what I was told. He said the best thing to is paint over it as quickly as possible.

I rarely ever see graffiti anywhere in town. I remember about 10 years ago I would see some occasionally, but not anymore. I guess I just don't go to those areas.
