Just saw this on a tech blog and found it amusing. It looks like Tony Hsieh is doing more than just transforming downtown Las Vegas... he's transforming minds.

Very Google-esque:
Zappos Isn't a Cult? All Tony Hsieh's Friends Got Matching Tattoos

I don't consider it a cult. More like true friends stats. True some South LA gangs get the tear drop tat. This really doesn't seem to hold the same life and death meaning as that in regards to an illegitimate business.

Fellowship can take many forms. The staff of a Downtown bar I frequent just got matching tats - as did my nieces and nephews.

But, sensationalism gets the press. Movers and shakers like Hsieh are bound to step on some toes when making big changes and thus provide motivation to their critics.

I've worked places too where co-workers went out and got matching tats (related to the industry I work in).
I don't think this is remarkably unusual behavior.

My eldest brat used to work security for the downtown Zappos crew. He asked a Zappos member why they paid the silly outsourcing rate instead of hiring direct for security. The Zappos guy said, "Well, we don't hire the kind of people that would break up a fight or rough someone up." Eldest brat said " I got news for you buddy, my company doesn't either. We take down information and call the cops if necessary. None of us are authorized to use any type of force."

Zappos is not a cult, but it's a pretty funny corporate culture. Travelscape used to be like that before Expedia bought them out.

Say all you want about Zappos and Tony Hsieh. I met and spoke to Tony Hsieh not long ago. Seem like a nice guy. More to come in Downtown Vegas in particular Fremont East District. I was walking in the area today, lots of bordered up lots that are being worked on. Things are improving that is for sure and Tony is spending his own money. I enjoy visiting Downtown Fremont East now and there are more to experience compared to years past. I have lived here nearly 30 years and can tell the big difference.

It seems the trend amongst non-zappos people is to have feeling of animosity towards the folks at zappos. For instance, I overheard a lady downtown (at dinner) say 'oh gosh, there are those snobby zappos people.... they think they own this place'.....

WoW...Zappos people experiencing the same horrors as Summerlin residents...who knew!

Its unfortunate but some people are always going to have issues with things they feel left out of or secretly wish they were a part of. I think its just an ugly part of human nature.
