Don't forget that Nevada is treated as a colony or at best a territory. Over 80% of Nevada is Federal lands and the population is very small with little representation in Washington. This is the main reason why they did all atomic bomb testing and now using Nevada as the nations nuclear trash can.

As a Nevadan, let me throw this in - when Senator Dingy Harry was establishing his lucrative political base, he pandered to those interested in creating Yucca Mountain for storing nuclear waste. He went out of his way to get breaks for contractors and others contributing to his political campaigns.

Once he became Senate Majority Leader, he did a 180 and began to speak up about his opposition to the very site he once pushed.

Where else should nuclear waste be stored. Hanover, WA where it's seeping into the ground water?

There are dozens and dozens of better places. In fact with the present containment strategy virtually anywhere with thick rock will do. Note that what they finally decided was not to count on the safety of the rock, which was the initial selling point for Yucca but instead the integrity of the casks. That is because they cannot rule out water entry in the Yucca structure.

I could deal with Yucca being one of say five such repositories with large compensating payments to Nevada. But otherwise let them keep the waste where they made it.

And if you want a reason to resist at Yucca Hanford is an object lesson in not trusting the federales.

Crawford, TX would be an excellent alternative, right next to the Bush ranch.
