Any other old-timers remember this? It would have been about 1985.

Yep one block east of Red Rock Theater. I remember eating there a few
times and at that time it was just like Sizzler. You ordered an entrée and paid extra for the salad bar that also included pasta, baked potatoes and desert. I use to like Sizzler for the sheer simplicity of it and ate there often. Decent meal for a decent price without dealing with casino parking for something comparable for the same price range. I was disappointed when the Trop and Eastern location closed up in 2008.

Sometimes the best food is cheap food. No expectations. At times something as simple as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich along with a cold glass of milk can rate with the best meal you ever had. So bring on the GC. For those in the know I also like Waffle House. Smothered and covered babyyyyy.

Yup. I think Golden Corral will be a good place for families with kids to go. Will I go? Probably not, but I know plenty of people who will. Not all chain restaurant food is bad anyway. I happen to like the Swedish pancakes at IHOP.

I don't get chain restaurant snobbery. Sometimes a chain is a good thing; you know what you are getting. I like a lot of chains. I have eaten at Olive Garden, PF Changes, Denny's, Hash House, Del Taco (best fries ever), etc while in Vegas. No biggie

Its good for Vegas to have some "ordinary" places to eat like GC.

OMG...Waffle House. Yes. Look forward to that once I get to the SW!

I can get breakfast (with a delicious freshly-made egg white omelette) at Aliante for $3 most days. Dinner usually costs me under $6. Even at the prices most people pay there, it's hard to understand the allure of a Golden Corral. While Aliante may only be a mid-range buffet & some stuff is 'meh', I'd take it over a Golden Corral anyday. Beverages included, decent service & I barely have to go into the Casino.

Maybe there's the "cheap, low-end, take the family but not to a casino" appeal but is it really THAT big of a market? Golden Corral coming into an ultra-competitive oversaturated market. Seems kinda like deciding to launch a new low-end fast-food place when there's already a McDonalds/Burger King/Wendys/Carls Jr/In-N-Out/Arbys/Del Taco/Taco Bell on every corner.
What I would love to see back in town is Furr's Cafeteria. I used to go to the one by East Sahara next to KMart and also by the Meadows Mall.

Olive Garden is nice for a quick lunch- soup, salad, bread sticks and a glass of Sangria. I also like our local PF Chang's, Red Lobster, The Boiling Crab, and Outback. I'm not fond of Applebees, TGIF, or Chili's.

I have an aversion to buffets (except breakfast) so GC will not be on my list, but I hope they do well.

I dont think anyone is downing chains in this particular thread, just the fact that GC will be a less than mediocre buffet offering in a town full of buffets that are offering way more value and way better quality for the money.

Chain restaurant chain snobbery is because the sysco truck drives around town dropping off the same frozen mozzarella sticks that are just marketed differently at TGIChilliRubyApplebees etc. Meanwhile the independent guy down the street breading his own mozzarella sticks and making his own dipping sauce gets no love. Thats the basis. Whether it holds true in any one locale or in anyones singular opinion is indifferent. Eat what you like.

I have eaten buffets in Vegas and most that I tried were "meh" at best. All of the times I have eaten at GC has been good (which is better than "meh" heehee). And I have eaten at GC a LOT.

I work in the food service industry, so I understand about SYSCO food all too well. I don't think it is ALL bad.
