Yes the porn industry is here, Vegas hosts the AVN awards in January, and when CA passed the you must use a condom law, many productions moved to Vegas.

What Vegas needs to prosper is to make gay marriage legal, and be the Homosexual wedding capital of the world
and to legalize Marijuana, because the bible says "He who lies with another man should be stoned"

Jonathan
Imagine if marijuana was legalized. Win win for the casino industry since people "under the influenced" will be influenced to drink more and gamble foolishly. I Love Marijuana!

And yes, the wedding industry is also significant in LV. The V. But gay marriage is a tough sell in LV where churches and bible fearing people are everywhere.

Back to the porn industry...LV already has a section of town (and right next to the Strip too by golly) parceled out and designate for adult entertainment. It's where all the lap dance clubs are currently. Just throw in porn production into the mix and we can all say good night and cuddle up.

I Love LV!

With the explosion of natural gas production, alternative energy is essentially dead economically. It's much cheaper to build natgas plants than widely scattered solar and wind farms.

Alternate energy doesn't work without big subsidies.

Porn, as an industry, is not doing particularly well. It's essentially getting pirated to death.

And, in any case, as other have mentioned, porn is happening in Vegas already. The government doesn't need to (and won't) get involved. All it needs to do is stay out of the way.

I say the LV Convention and Visitor's Bureau (LVCVB) should seriously consider inviting the porn industry that is currently holed up in "The Valley" in California to come and set up shop in LV.

What could be a better fit? Porn + LV = Money Baby(tm).

And there will never be want for "talent". Walk into any day or night club in LV and there will be throngs of ready and willing guys and gals. Some of them are already dressed up and acting and walking like sluts to begin with. That's what I call natural talent. The movie practically directs itself. Just throw in the lube and condoms and let the magic happen.

C'mon Vegas! Live up to "the big V" that people know you for.

I am I Love Garlic. Haters can suck it.

My take:

Transportation. The I-11 project wan in the news yesterday. They need to light a fire under that.

They also need to refloat and expedite the Ivanpah airport. This was originally conceived as a cargo airport and relief for McCarran (which doesn't have much expansion capacity left.) While it's not really up to capacity, it will be in the time frame it would take to get Ivanpah up and running. I would also reserve land to do a major expansion of Ivanpah, so that it could eventually replace McCarran (more on this later).

Think about the combination of the I-15, I-11 (running from Mexico to Canada), the new cargo airport, and the major transcon freight rail line (Union Pacific?) all converging in Vegas. Why would a company NOT want to put major manufacturing and transportation facilities there. This is especially true since it's close to the big Cali market, but not in it and subject to it's taxes and regulation (and in Nevada's highly advantageous low tax environment.)

About using Ivanpah to replace McCarran:

McCarran is convenient because it's essentially in the middle of the action, and right next to the strip. But that also imposes some problems. At the moment, new casino development isn't so much happening, and there is development land available. It's not likely that this will always be the case. At some point the available land on the strip will be soaked up. McCarran essentially blocks any major casino development contiguous to the exiting resorts on the south end of the strip. If McCarran goes away, Several lineal miles of strip frontage would be opened up. In addition, a couple of miles of frontage would be opened up along Tropican and Sunset for semi or non-resort development.

Okay, but you can't get rid of the airport in a tourist dependent town. So expand Ivanpah, which would be built with two runways to six, and build a high speed rail link between Ivanpah, and the existing terminal at McCarran, which would be kept as a station for the HSR and an interface local ground transportation. Very few travelers would drive to-from Ivanpah, they take the HSR right into town. Of course this is 20+ years out. But the planning would start now.

All this infrastructure would create a large number of jobs to build, and when built would support a huge number of permanent jobs for half a century or more down the line.

I think Vegas did the "kid friendly" thing all wrong in the 90s. They tried to make a Vegas experience that all members of the family could enjoy together at the same time. That's impossible since different age groups have different definitions of "fun".

I believe we need to make Las Vegas more family friendly by SEGREGATING kids from their parents so they can go be "naughty" on their own. Disney Cruises does this very well with a kid program that you can leave your kids with highly trained staff who entertain them with games, missions and adventures for hours on end. Nothing ruins a gaming experience for adults more than seeing some trashy family letting their kid run wild around the casino floor. This just happened to me this week... eventually casino staff told the parents to take the kid away.

If there was a really good amusement park (with personalized, trained supervision), the kids and the parents can both make their trip to Las Vegas a memorable one and we'd attract more visitors and generate more revenue. We just need to follow the Disney Cruise business model on a grander scale. We could be the babysitter capital of the world, among other things.

It is hard to do a Disneyland type theme park in LV because the weather is so extreme for parts of the year (too hot, too cold). Disneyland in LA is the success that it is partly because of the famous SoCal weather.

The only theme parks that works in LV are water parks (done) and indoor ones (Adventure Dome).

Alas, when I am in LV, the theme park and frolicking happens in my room.

Cha-Ching!

GameWorks closed a few years back, I don't think the city is moving towards being more "kid friendly". Personally I think parents should leave the kids home when they come to Vegas.

Most skip Vegas altogether for that very reason, which is my point... the economy is suffereing because people don't feel comfortable bringing their kids to Vegas so they don't come at all. If we gave parents a REAL way for their kids to be safely entertained (kind of like a kids "day-camp" on the Strip), this would solve a lot of problems and generate tons of revenue on both ends. It's a win-win-win (kids, parents, local economy)
