I just received a letter from my HOA that I must landscape my backyard. I've been meaning to do this, but I currently live in NJ and it's hard to arrange remotely.

Does anyone know the minimum landscape requirements that would comply with HOA rules? I've read through the CCR's, but it only says that the yards must be landscaped. I realize all HOA's will have somewhat different rules, but I'm just trying to get a general idea.

I'm wondering if just laying down some crushed rock will suffice until I move to LV and can put in trees, plants and a patio.

Thanks!

crushed rocks and a tree would probably do it for most HOA's
how big of a yard?

I don't know the size of the yard. I always meant to measure it, but never got around to it. It's not very big and basically a large rectangle. Below is a photo of my yard.

Every HOA's CC&Rs are different. Only your HOA or someone with access to your HOA's CC&Rs can answer your question. The rest of us can only offer up generalizations based on our experience with our own HOA.

A landscaper that does a lot of work in your HOA might know what is required - but don't believe them unless they can show you they have a copy of the CC&Rs and will follow them. You want to avoid the situation where they claim they know what is required, install and charge you, and then you find out you're still not compliant.

Well if they're not going to state what the requirements are for you to be compliant, then you don't have to worry about complying with their request so quickly. Don't do anything until you know exactly what their specifications are and make sure to get it in writing.

Look out your upstairs windows at those other yards and see what the least has in it.

BTW, what is on your ground in lieu of soil? Sand or crushed rock? Anyway, get upstairs.

In this situation the CC&Rs probably say the the HOA board can imposes whatever rules they want. Does the OP have a copy of the current rules, do they specify what the landscaping needs to be, or is it just up to the subjective judgement of the board.

Good suggestion, but the OP is living in NJ presently. It's a long way to go, at the moment, at least, to get upstairs.
