Hi guys, as stated in the title I'm looking to become an apprentice as an electrician and I was wondering if the employment is still up and down. Is it even worth it?

by the time you get fully trained & licensed, i'm guessing the economy will be back in full swing. besides, doesn't EVERYONE need a licensed electrician from time to time?

Go for it. It's a skill that can't get outsourced.

Funny you should say that...I am in need of a good electrician to check our subpanel in the garage, and our A/C disconnect that needed replacement after arcing and somewhat melting.

It's feast or famine. If you want to do it, go for it. Don't let a down market dissuade you. It is always going to be cyclic unless you get a nice in house job or something.

See but I hate the fact that a career is like that. I mean you spend years learning a trade and you have to worry about being laid off. The whole point of pursuing a career is to feed yourself and your family. I'd rather have a consistent job where I'm promised a paycheck, rather than worrying about if I'll have work the next month

Every career has that risk or potential to downsize. That's when networking comes in.

Then my suggestion is to look to at trades outside the construction industry.

One trade that fits the bill - a steadily increasing paycheck, can't be outsourced to India/China, etc etc is to look here: It isn't everyone's cup of tea, though. Online Colleges For Mortuary Science

According to this website, http://mortuaryscienceschools.org/mo...ols-in-nevada/ ,

Quote:
While there are no accredited mortuary science schools in Nevada, the State does have specific regulations that must be followed before an individual can become licensed. Specifically, an individual must complete 60 college credit hours and one year of mortuary science schooling. A detailed application containing financial history, medical history, and criminal history must be filled out by all people seeking a license. In addition, the National Board Examination must be passed. A yearlong supervised apprenticeship must be completed, as well. During the course of the apprenticeship, individuals are required to embalm 50 bodies. They must have two individuals vouch that they are of good moral character, as well. There is job growth expected in Nevada for funeral service personnel with Las Vegas remaining one of the highest paying cities.

A friend of mine back East is a Master Electrician. He went through the same issues - he has a family to support and when the economy turned down he wanted a more secure job.

He went to work for a large Hospital. He says the pay and benefits are fantastic. He said it's 90% checking and testing systems routinely to insure reliability. The only down side was he had to do shift work for a few years (midnight to 8am IIRC) but, he said it was absolutely worth it.

Not everything is construction based. Many large buildings have their own in house electricians for repair and routine maintenance. I have to believe the Casino's and Hospitals in the area are no different. If you want something with a bit more stability this may be a route to look into.
