Hey everyone.

I am going to share a bit of information about myself and and i would appreciate your advice on wether I should make the move to Vegas within the next six months.

I am 26, married with a 4 year old daughter and I currently live in nyc paying 1400 / month rent for a two bedroom. I own a security conpany which provides security to bars / restaurants (think bouncers). On average I make around $1000-$1200 a week before taxes.

My lease is up june 9th. My wife and daughter have been living in vegas with her grandmother for the past week as I figured she coule stay there and I could stay at a friends plsce for a few months to save up some money. Im honestly quite tired of nyc, high rent being one thing and I would love a change of pace and enviroment.

security has been my choice of profession since I turned 18 and it has treated me very well. Now considering I would make the move, based on my information above and lets say $5000 cash, would you advise that I moved to las vegas? How would I fair job wise with plenty of experience and credentials (guard card, armed guard, ccw permit)? Also, I would have a free place to stay until we can get ourselves situated.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

There's a saying around these parts that I think very wise, and that's "job first". If you had a job lined up, $5,000 would be doable, but with no job, a family, a child, and no home, you would probably want closer to $20,000 to get started.

That said, security is a huge business in this town, so there are probably opportunities for you based on your credentials.

Good luck!

Highly unlikely your type of business would find much success in Vegas at least at the start. So many bars are either part of a chain or are affiliated with a casino, both of which have large internal resources devoted to security. The nightclubs and hotspots which use bouncers are almost all in casinos now, about the only places you might have a shot are the strip clubs. However due to the high number of security people from the casinos and the large number of former police and military who seem to gravitate to Vegas, it will be quite a challenge to get up and running. Your best shot might be to see if there is a way you can get into more residential security efforts.

Jobs for security people with good experience are easy to find, but hard to make a living off of. Take a look around, talk with people you meet who are doing security and make a decision then about if it makes sense for you. Plenty of money is spent on security, but your ability to get a piece of it has to really be in question when you don't have a local background to start with.

The big question is do you have all of the required credentials in NEVADA?

Security is a dime a dozen here. The best jobs are in the casinos...even then, you're looking at $14/hr to start. That is, of course, after the 2-4 month application process and hopefully knowing someone. Even after landing a casino security job it may be a few weeks before actually starting.

The nightclubs are managed mostly by either the casinos or professional groups like Light and AMG. Expect $11/hr to start and $16 if you get a lead position.

This is very much a who you know town. ....Who do you know?

$5000.00 isn't enough in your situation.

I did come here with less but I already had my Nevada credentials and two part time jobs and an apartment waiting for me when I got here.

Comeon Cyborg. He has a place to live cheap. CCW in NY. Not relevant but a great credential.

I would think work in a week and good work in a couple of months.

Security is a much better field here than virtually anywhere and if he knows how to run a guerrilla agency he may get rich.

I should tell him to hire you early on and keep you out of cabs.

I'm not saying it's not doable or a good idea...just that $5k is a bit light considering how long it takes to get work here.

Now if he was already credentialed and hired somewhere, as I was, then 5K can be stretched much farther.

...and you cannot just move here and start a guard company....not before 5K runs out.

Check out the P.I.L.B. requirements.

Thanks for the replies. I have no intention of doing a startup security company in vegas, just mentioned it as a form of experience. I will continue to manage it from vegas should I move since my partner will still br in nyc. As far as the nevada requirements, I will getting it as I visit nevada to see my wife weeks at a time. Im aware of the PILB requirements and definitely plan on having all those ducks in order before I move. Ccw I hear is easy to get in vegas, anyone care to add insight to that? I would love to join LVPD but I heard thry were not hiring. As far as knowing someone, ill be a new resident on a fresh start.

Ask Von -- much of our security work comes from off-duty Air Force who work the various concerts and events essentially for free -- money is given to their social funds. And the airmen donate time to grow these funds.

Why on earth would anyone want to abandon a successful business to compete with free labor?

Agreed! Although it sounds like OP will still be generating income from the NYC business, which is a game changer for sure.

If OP has that $1.2-1.4k per week income still then 5K is completely enough. In fact OP could just move here, maintain that income and never work her and live decently.

I guess we need to know all of the facts as they make quite a difference.

As for doing security here, OP might find it quite boring....I did. Especially the nightclub aspect. I saw WAY more action in Denver than here! I never went hands on once here...even after six months! Whereas in Denver, I went hands on almost nightly.....some nights many times. Then there's the varying rules for different people...it happens everywhere but here it's much more frequent.

Yep...this is dead on. A good example is the EDC(electric daisy carnival). Nellis AFB is providing over half of the bodies needed for security details at $10 an hour. Last year no military member was allowed to step foot near the EDC because of the stigma attached from previous years. Security companies were paying $25 an hour to work the event. Not anymore, the most that I have heard is $14 an hour now. And that's with PILB and Guard card.

None of us active military have these cards. Those requirements are waived since we are not paid directly. BUT if you work for a private company, those requirements are mandatory. Weird system.
