Another bridge collapsed last night this time in Washington State. Obviously, the US has a major infrastructure problem. Are there any bridges, tunnels or anything else to be concerned about in the Las Vegas Valley?

The biggest concern probably would be Hoover Dam, in the unlikely event that an earthquake ever hit near it.

It looks like in the greater LV area bridges are in good shape many new ones. In the next ten years be prepared for more events like the collapsing of bridges in many parts of America. Our road inter-structure is old and weather beaten. Keep in mind Eisenhower started this back in the late 50's and Johnson finished it up through the country. The interstate roads got new bridges but many well traveled highways used the older bridge structures with band aid updates. Not much thought was put in place on here the $$$ would come from to maintain these structures or replace them. Out here in the SW you do not have many bridges like back east and many parts of the country so the problem will be more significant in mountain and river areas. The cost this time to rebuild will be out of sight!!! Local and state governments can not afford to repair or replace them so it looks like the FEDS will have to do something (that is a scary thought).

Off topic but although the bridge was declared structurally deficient, meaning it needed repairs and/or more than routine maintenance, the reason for the collapse was a tractor trailer that was carrying a load that was too large for the bridge striking a girder.

On topic, stay away from the Charleston underpass during a substantial rain event.

Coming from here in Backeastland, I'm always pretty impressed with the infrastructure in Vegas. Everything, especially the roads, seem new and well maintained.

I wouldn't worry about it but perhaps a civil or structural engineer should give his own opinion regarding the matter. Vegas is a baby city compared to everywhere else and thusly built with better standards and regulations.

Our bridges are all relatively new. Hoover Dam isn't going to crack, and if it did the water wouldn't come anywhere near Las Vegas. The flooding problem at Charleston underpass has been fixed for years. The reason we all live here is that Las Vegas is new and beautiful, and free from nearly all natural disasters, and isn't likely going to have those kinds of things happen.

Knock on wood.

If it ever decides to rain and you come upon water flowing across the roadway, don't drive through it...back up and go around. Better yet, stay home.

Isn't the flooding issue just a natural problem due to the hard soil's inability to absorb water? It's not like engineers can dig a huge underwater basin to alleviate the problem.
