Move here for work and you'll find low salaries in most professions (yet a preponderance of blue-collar jobs in construction, housekeeping, food services, etc.) Move here to retire and you'll find little to do but spend your afternoons and evenings at casinos. (Believe me, the weather is way too hot to golf 4-5 months each year, unless you're willing to pay premium $200 green fees for getting on courses before 9 a.m.) Move here with children and you'll find yourself explaining a lot of "adult stuff" and trying to keep your teenage children focused on college - instead of being a cocktail waitress or casino worker. Move here with any thoughts of community participation and be prepared to be disappointed. Sure, there are people who get involved but most who move here, don't. Because of the apathy in this community, deserving non-profits really struggle. Because of that apathy, Las Vegas tends to elect political leaders who, more often than not, face ethics charges and or federal/state indictments. Truly! Check out news stories about Clark County public officials - all but a few have been federally prosecuted and convicted and face jail time. On the upside. Churches seem to flourish here - as havens and ways to connect. And entertainment options are plentiful (and, of course, expensive.) The musical/theatrical talent Las Vegas attracts is truly amazing. But hey, you can see Elton John and Celine Dion on the same night, and even sqeeze in a bit of Wayne Newton..now THAT is surely worth 150 dollars a pop! LOL!
the worst crooked politician, greedy and apathetic, no sir.
san diego is the worst. buts its ok because they all wear hawaiian shirts.
wer're good.

Nobody has any right to put down how much one spends on activities for their family and children. hey, if you have the money to support it, go for it. I spend that much on my dogs.

I say that is my business, if I have the money to spend.
5kingsinvegas is right. Soccer moms very rarely look like that picture. I know many, and have been to many games. Many hot mama's out there, and hot coaches to boot.

It is only on the national radar as a great place for someone to find a decent paying semi-skilled job, or to make slightly more in a working-class occupation vis-a-vis other cities. That is the attraction, and those whose need of a living-wage job supercedes the need for a first-class environment for their children will choose Vegas. I would imagine most parents really try hard to make things as normal as possible for their kids. Seeing that Las Vegas and Nevada skews near the bottom in many vital social stats, it is, and will continue to be, a losing battle. There is an abject lack of a decent school system, libraries, public parks, rec facilities, and community participation, all things that very much matter in the growth and nurturance of a child. I believe locals are an afterthought to the power structure in Las Vegas. The children of the locals most of all. Hard to say what is sadder, that it happens at all, or that the locals let it happen without fighting it........................................
Once again, you don't know what the he** you're talking about This city has more parks than most cities. 4 miles from my house is Centennial Hills Park which is actually being expanded and next to it will be the Centennial Hills Library. There is a new YMCA next to where the library is being built with an outdoor pool with slides, the park has numerous soccer, softball, volleyball, basketball, courts along with a skateboard park. I drive by it every day and it is packed especially at night with the soccer games.

You are in no position to question how anyone spends their money on their children. I applaud any parent who looks out for the best interests of their children Do yourself a favor and get your facts straight!!!!!

Restaurants in NYC are generally on the expensive side. Of course, the best falafel I ever had, was from a street vendor in NYC...and was quite inexpensive. Sit down restaurants, however, are higher than average.

I don't particularly love living in Vegas, but the one complaint that makes me laugh is the whole "Vegas corrupts the minds of youth" arguement. I went to high school here, as well as middle school. I can say first hand that said stereotype is completely untrue.

First of all, when it comes to everyday life, residents are usually disconnected from the strip. Children may occasionally see a racy billboard, but that's about the extent of it. And, in all honesty, sexual innuendos in the mass media are not exclusive to Vegas (I'm pretty certain the Carl's Jr. commercial featuring Paris Hilton was played nation-wide).

And I've yet to meet many local high school students who have abandoned all hopes of college and aspire to be strippers. Teenagers here are like teenagers everywhere else. They're not allowed into clubs or bars. For the most part, the "distractions" on the strip have little effect on them.

(and i am willing to bet that there are plenty of ridiculously expensive places to eat in the big apple)

if you would like a recommendation on places to eat in LV that have great food at reasonable prices just ask....there are plenty of them and most of us would be happy to point them out. the city of LV has a lot more to offer than what most tourists see. that is why many of us get annoyed when people don't take the time to see what the city has to offer, simply assuming that it is all like the strip.

(and i like the strip...but i don't eat there, shop there, or live there)
What kills me is how tourists presume everyone that lives in Vegas in either a blackjack dealer or a hooker......my woman even got hit on as a hooker at a hotel function we were at, but she said it kinda turned her on.

And also to clarify, my kids go to Catholic school here as well as when we lived in Michigan. In Michigan we lived in Livingston county which was known for having some of the best schools in the state. It is a religious choice to send my children to private school not because I think CCSD schools are horrible. I happen to teach in a very good public school here that I would send my children to if I ever could not afford Catholic school.

Don't worry honey, my hubby and I do just fine I do appreciate your concern though!!!

Also, on a side note, you haven't been to Vegas for awhile if you think that is how soccer mom's look We have some pretty hot coaches out here so we always make sure to have the hair and make-up on
You ladies sound like the vixens from Desperate Housewives, tarting yourselves up for the coaches and cable guys.
