No surprise here. This is how gentrification works. I guess get down there before all the mom and pop joints are gone. The Kabob place was pretty good by the way.

A walk down Fremont illustrates the ups and downs of the redevelopment game | Las Vegas CityLife

Quote:
Steve Yono has eight employees at the Family Market and Deli at Seventh and Fremont, across from the El Cortez. He’s been there for 15 years, riding economic downturns, huge construction projects, infestations of drug dealers and, finally, a much-hoped for economic resurgence.
Now he has a month to move out.

“We’d love to stay down here,” he says. “Change is good. What we’re complaining about — if you’re not part of the culture, then you’re not welcome.”
Yono says the axe fell late last year. His landlords were renegotiating a long-term lease. First the discussion was for five years, then three years. Then he learned that the entire building would be leased to the Resort Gaming Group. The news, he says, was heartbreaking.

“We weathered every storm that was here,” Yono says. “We believed in downtown. … We’ve seen it all here, and then just as things were turning around, we were asked to leave.”

It is sad to see a long term business owner treated that way. It is the new normal I guess. Off topic here but... I don't know how much longer my husband and I will continue to return to Las Vegas. We have spent a fortune in Las Vegas over the last 20 some years but we are no longer the demographic that Las Vegas seeks. I have no interest in ultra lounges and/or booming music. I miss the days of live music and old time slot machines. I appreciate the free room but if you don't offer us geezers some age appropriate entertainment we will bail. The cab driver who drove us to the airport told us that spring break was always the worst week because the "the kids" don't tip.

Redevelopment according to Tony Hsieh. If you are a business he wants to patronize you stay - if not you go. I think the guy gets far too many kudos for what is really a selfish, for profit redevelopment project. I mean the zappos employees need to eat, sleep, shop, sip their espresso and work right?

Screw the long term tenants. Make downtown a lame hipster destination and even more sterile than some of the strip properties.

To logline.......back in the day skippy the casinos had at least two live acts a day in the lounges. These were actually people who could sing and/or play instruments. Can you wrap your head around an actual entertainer vs some coked up idiot spinning records?
