My girlfriend and I want to relocate to the Henderson area. We have live in Pennsylvania our entire lives. I have been a Police Officer for 24 years and i am looking to retire, but i want to gain employment in Vegas before i retire and move.

My question is what is the best job in vegas for retired Cops? I am only 44 years old. Looking for a good paying job. No Casino security job. It seems they don't pay. Any ideas would be helpful. I have been looking for a job online for the last 2 months.

Thanks

Might consider running for sheriff.

TM,

I think you have a bit of a chicken and egg issue. Vegas has such a transient population, that most employers want to see that you're living their before offering you a job (unless it's something with a high enough demand that they have to look out of town.) So you may have to move, then start looking.

There's a fair amount of military activity in and around Vegas (Nellis AFB and such.) Are you ex-military? Maybe there a civilian DOD job you can find.

I got two security Kona in LV from out of state, but if you think casino security doesn't pay then you're not going to like any of the security jobs! Casino security jobs are plum compared...

The important thing to consider is what skills sets you have to put out there. Saying you've been a cop tells us no more than someone saying they have been in the military does. For, different cops (and soldiers) do specific tasks per their assignments. It's the skills gained that matter to a future employer, not the fact one served. And, hopefully, you've made use of whatever educational assistance your department had to offer. Degrees, like skill sets, are transferable and do matter.

I retired from Law Enforcement at 44 after 20 years of service. My wife is still a cop (who will retire next year). I don't share online what I do now, but I will say that I dragged every skill set and certification/degree with me out of my dept I could.

Good luck to you and thank you for your service.

Bill

Security doesn't pay much in Vegas, most jobs have no benefits and are minim wage jobs, with economy so bad here employers can really take advantage of you. There is also a real high turnover in security.

MGM Mirage (or whatever they wanna call themselves these days) Casino Security paid WELL when I was working there ~5yrs ago. I am a computer geek & we got paid well, but we weren't entitled to raises or overtime. The security guards I got to know got both! They had all the same benefits as the rest of us got (retirement, sick/vacation time, insurance, etc).

Also, I can't speak for LV Metro dept, but for Nye County Sheriff's Office - we WELCOME retired cops to work on our auxillary unit. We also have MANY retired cops from back east hired on as cops, working on their 2nd retirement
