Crime discussion was interesting. I was a 9-1-1 operator/dispatcher for the police here and crime is everywhere. Live in a nice area and stay in nice area surroundings and bam, criminals come there. You can barely win and must always be alert.
Your taxing structure and cost of living there is so much better than the midwest. It is perfectly normal to pay at least $6K or more a year in property taxes and quite easily, over $400 a month for basic utilities in Ohio.
One of the hardest decisions is making a wise choice on housing. I have a realtor but they try to remain somewhat impartial. Have been told one gets more house for the money in the north and I study all the areas as best as I can but it is impossible to get a handle on many of them because of them being gated. At this point, tend to be drawn to Anthem as I like some of the house plans and am thinking it would be much easier to make friends in a community such as this and like areas in the foothills of the mountains. Also tend to like Seven Hills and Stallion Mountain, although I did read some negativity about a sheep ranch near this area. Price wise, I'm thinking not to spend over $300K for 1800 - 2200 sq. ft.

2009 is a little ways off and the housing market is still a bit iffy out here. My suggestion is to look online and and target the areas you like to keep on top of what is available untill it is closer to the time you want to move. 300k should get you a modest single famiy home, just don't expect a yard. Take a few trips out here and drive the areas to really see if they meet your needs (gives you an easy excuse to come to vegas for a little vacation).

I'm doing about the same thing right now, only I am heading east around early 2009 and this is the approach I am taking towards my move.

I've seen too many newbies move to Vegas (usually single early 20's people) and go completly crazy here, and it is really sad to watch.
Yes, it is a real shame when people let themselves fall prey to those things. Of course, if you don't have those "problems" Vegas can be a great place. For me...I'm thinking of retirement at this point and, IMO, Vegas is just not affordable retirement living in the style I want to live in. I'd have to downsize way too drastically, and I'd just as soon move to NEPA or even SC and live a nice affordable, quiet life with no worries about the next Nevada Power rate hike or whatever

But...gosh it is GORGEOUS out today!!! I've just been out driving, down to the Strip and then back to Henderson. Clear blue skies, a nice breeze...

ByebyeVegas, are you leaving or have you left?

I'm still here for another year or so while I save up to move. I'm looking to relocate me and the family back east. Thats how I found this board. I've been researching my move and thought I'd dropp my 2cents in on Vegas life.

I was just thinking of what you wrote about the 10x magnification of problems thing. There's a metaphor in here...we can call it 'The Wheel of Magnification!' A person arriving in LV with problems could spin a wheel when they get there...think of one of those big wheels in the casinos. If it lands on the Joker spot, life in LV will actually turn out better for the person betting on it. Any other spot varies from 1x (same problems), 2x (twice as many problems), 5x & 10x.

(The chances of it landing on Joker are quite slim!...1x & 2x quite common, 5x & 10x less common...truth be told, most moving there with problems think it WILL DEFINITELY land on the Joker spot!)
Yeah, moving to Vegas is a gamble. More so for the younger crowd. Not to say older people have nothing to worry about, they have lots of ways of hurting themselves and family, it is just that 20's seem to be the years you are most prone to destroying yourself (most likely to land on the 5x spot on the wheel).

Seven Hills or SCA (Sun City Anthem) I chose SCA for the life style and the amenities. I too was torn between the two but chose the latter. Since moving into Anthem I have made some terrific new friends and although, granted, HOAs have their draw-backs, they also have many advantages. We will get through this crisis of the foreclosures; in fact, this might just make it something of a “buyer’s market” for GOOD BUYERS from our prospective. If sincere residents come in and take on these homes maybe this will turn around and we can take our community back the way it was meant to me.

This is a beautiful place, the views of the city are awesome, the air is clean and I have spent the better part of my 60 plus years in Las Vegas/Henderson. I have a HUGE investment in my home here and have never regretted it. Let me know if you opt to move here, we will make you very welcome.

I agree with everything everyone has written. On the theme of people moving and bring their problems with them, my favorite bumper sticker is, "wherever you go.....there you are!"
