We will be driving to Las Vegas from Los Angeles on Christmas (a Tuesday) morning:
1. What time in the morning is best to leave?
2. Would there be more traffic than a non-holiday or less?
3. Would there likely be rain/snow on the way?
Thanks!

It's been a while since I've made that holiday trek, but we always found that traffic was lighter on the actual holiday as opposed to the day before or the day after. (I was going in the opposite direction, but traffic was light on both sides)

Here's a link to a weather forecast. They don't have it that far in advance (Christmas) but it's a helpful site.
Weather for Las Vegas, NV.

Mercifully, I never encountered rain or snow, but I have heard of it happening, especially in the Cajon pass area. Making sure your windshield wipers are in good shape and adding a coat of Rain-X to the windshield wouldn't be a bad idea as a precaution.

I doubt you'll catch much traffic on Christmas day on a Tues. Most people will have already travelled on the weekend. As to weather? Sorry but it's way too far out to guess. Like NLVgal said, it will most likely only affect you in the Pass, if at all.

I've gone over the Cajon Pass conservatively 100+ times. I've never encountered the pass being closed for any extended period of time in the winter.

Christmas morning should be very light traffic.

I have made the trip around 40 or 50 times. Turned back once at the Nevada line for snow. Closed for a day I believe. Went through snow in Cajon Pass on one occasion.

So 50:1 or so you will have an uneventful trip. The traffic is light on holidays.

I second NLVgal's post.

We've done several trips on the actual holiday...not too bad. Been fortunate enough not to encounter a closure, though we have driven in heavy rain/wind/light snow. The day after a holiday is crazy, especially for those returning to CA.

Ditto. And you could always go via Palmdale and miss Cajon Pass. The traffic problem might be in going back to Cal., depending on the day. It's usually (relatively) quiet around here at Christmas.
