Hi-
I have a very quick question. We will be landing at McCarren around 6:00PM on a Tuesday night and then we will drive to Mesquite for a few days before coming back to Las Vegas for the weekend. Can someone let me know about traffic at that time? We are from MA and landing at Logan Airport would be a nightmare. Any suggestions for shortcuts, or should we plan on having dinner in Las Vegas and then continue our drive? Thanks, in advance.

Jo

You'll probably have some traffic along most of I-15 through the city, at least until you get past the interchange with the 95. It's not that bad, though. Having moved from Los Angeles, the worst traffic here barely even qualifies as a delay, IMO...

Plus, if you have any baggage you have to claim that will take some time and chances are you will have missed alot of the rush hour.

Like swagger said, I barely notice the "rush hour" here compared to Detroit's nightmare-(even their suburbs are awful)

Have fun!!!!

Yup - Practically it will take you to 6:30 or 6:45 to clear the airport. The rush is dropping off by 6:00PM - and is not a big deal.

Follow out to 15N and right out of town. A little congestion than wide open high way.

It's nothing like the traffic in Boston, and here driving is not considered a contact sport as it is there.

Usually by 6:00pm the "rush" hour is pretty much over, but due to construction on I-15 north of the spaghetti bowl, it can get congested at any time. Won't be a big deal though. Then you're in the wide open desert with 75mph speed limit and nobody in your way.

It will probably be after 8:00pm (or 11pm your time) when you get to Mesquite, so you might want to grab a bite before you leave Las Vegas as there is no place to eat other than snack food between here and there, and only two places I can think of to get gas once you leave Las Vegas, and they are spread far apart.

Are you picking up a rental car?

If so I can't see you getting out of the airport with luggage and into a rental car at the RCF until close to 715pm. I'd send one of you to pick up the rental while the other waits for the bags and then meet each other at passanger pickup.

That said, I wouldn't drive I-15 N. There is construction between US-95 and Lake Mead but that is just me. I would take a combination of surface streets to get out of town. Something like:
Tropicana East to US 95 N.
Exit Charleston, go east (right). Go 2 miles and turn left (north) on Nellis. Pass the air force base on the right and then turn right on Las Vegas Blvd. Drive up about 8 miles and you will hit I-15 (passing the speedway) and you can be on your way.

I'd say it's about a 20-25 minute drive to the AFB and then only about 50-55 minutes to Mesquite from there.

A lot of lights will be hit going that route, not to say it won't work. The spaghetti bowl will be light and once they clear Craig Road then they can set the cruise at 80 and be at Mesquite in no time.

Thanks everyone. You have all given me great suggestions. I am glad to hear that while there may be traffic it should not be as bad as what I expect. Definitely think we will eat in Las Vegas and then head up to Mesquite.
