My family and I recently got back from a brief visit to Vegas. It had been a few years since we'd visited the place and our children were much younger. Now that they are both 21 and 16, respectively, we decided to visit again. I gotta say, we loved the new casino/hotels on the strip and the international flavor we felt walking around. Unlike most tourist, we often venture off the normal tourist path to see the "other" Vegas as well. I have friends who live there so they pretty much informed me on areas to visit.

All in all, I think I learned a lot more about the overall city and gained more respect for the place. I wondered about visiting now because of the dreary economic reports I'd been reading about the city. However, one of my local friends told me that the economy was improving and the crowds in the casinos didn't suggest anything different! If I have a complaint it's about the driving!!! Yikes! What the???

In any event, I want to give a shout out to the nice police officer in Boulder City who was kind enough not to give me a ticket for inadvertently running a light (was behind a truck in the intersection and couldn't see the light!!) I just followed it through the intersection and out of nowhere there were flashing lights behind my car! According to locals I was fortunate to leave with just a warning.

All in all, I'd have to say that I left more impressed with your city after this trip and plan to hopefully visit again sometime soon.

You don't know how lucky you got.

Thanks StaggerLee22! I think part of people's negativity of Vegas comes from everything surrounding the 8-mile strip. They rarely talk about other parts and miss the fact that there is an actual city, apart from the strip.

Funny, my cousin and I were stopped by a Boulder City police officer a couple nights ago. He was about to (rightfully) issue me a $1000 citation. He decided against it. My car got towed, but he was nice enough to drive me to my hotel, and made small talk with me. My cousin was not as lucky though.

What were you doing to merit a $1K citation? Driving drunk at 100mph through a school zone?

Hi all- I also just got back from a week-long vacation in Vegas and now am obsessed with Nevada! There is something about the beauty of the barren-ness all around you! While it is an isolated city, it truly is a world of its own. I also really liked Boulder City as it had some old town charm next to the gorgeous Lake Mead! I hope I can visit again soon. I don't even really care for all the gamling and drinking- there are just so many sights to see and things to do. There were more bums on the street than I'm used to, but I'd be curious to see what life is like there off the Strip.

A girl at work got a citation for driving on suspended license and having expired tags and she got a $1,500 ticket or something in that ball park. Also, at the DMV I went to there is a sign that states if caught driving without insurance, the first fine is $1,200. It doesn't take a lot to rack it up here. LOL
