We visit Las Vegas from BC Canada usually once per year. After always staying on the strip, we rented a house in Henderson last month because we wanted to see and experience the real Las Vegas.

It was wonderful checking out local shopping and restaurants, as well as the casinos on Boulder Hwy and in Henderson. Not only were the payouts so much better, it was enjoyable chatting with locals and finding out more about this great city.

Next trip will definitely be a rental in Henderson. Honestly, I didn't miss seeing the strip at all!

I hope the local people on this form understand that us visitors really enjoy the deals on rooms in LV. Station casinos offer the best packages and on my last stay I got comped for 3 nights and 2 buffets. Staying Sun thru Thurs at such low cost compared to the other places we visit. I have comps at other strip hotels and Fremont St. These comps and low prices take some of the sting out of the airfare prices we pay. Package deals for the strip air and room attract many people. Compared to the rest of the country LV has them beat hands down. Staying off the strip is not a hassle anymore thanks to GPS and the off strip casino's having more than just gambling. Most other tourist attractions in the country force you to use a mass transit system or pay out of the nose for parking and even then you have to hoof it to where your are going. One other thing that may be resulting from more folks staying off the strip is they see the real LV and might plan on moving there or retiring to LV. The more folks on this form support the positives of LV the more folks ill consider moving here so "Come here to play but consider coming here to stay." I should enter that in the Nevada slogan contest lol.

How do you get comps at the hotels?

I work as a dealer in one of the local oriented casinos that has been mentioned in this thread. I have also worked in a casino that was aimed more at the tourists that visit town. I've noticed a few differences from a dealer perspective. The local players have a lot more working knowledge of how to play the games and as a dealer I don't have to spend as much time explaining how to play the table games. Since many players come in every day it gets to the point that you don't even have to ask what they want to bet b/c you are so used to them that you just set up their bets for them. This can be a good and a bad thing as some regular players are a pleasure to be around and some are a drag so basically it's like any other working environment in that you have good and bad aspects that come along with both the local and tourist aimed markets.

They mailed them to me and you can ask the slot host at any casino each shift has one. I got that advise from reading Jean Scotts (The Comp Queen) web site. She has some good advise on how to score comps. Just Google her name. Many people do not know how to ask for comps or where. Everyone thinks Pit Bosses are the only ones who can do this. Please keep in mind you do not spend 20.00 and then expect a comp. Sign up for a players card in every place you go in also and use it.I find the Station casinos good and you can use the card in all of their casinos and the comps usually include all of their casinos. So staying off the strip does have it's advantages and competition is good and all of the casinos in LV want your business.

Everyone has different ideas of what makes a fun trip to Vegas, which is why it is good there are so many different things to do. I have a couple of friends who have been to Vegas several times (one of them is there right now) and they have never ventured off the strip. One always stays at the same place and does the same things. That works for them, but for me I feel like they are missing so much.

It's like going to Orlando and JUST going to Disney, or going to Disney and checking out what the city of Orlando has to offer as well.

I've gone to the casinos in Henderson, but I try to not make a habit of it.

If I was going to a station casino, the best casino in Henderson, I would much rather go to Red Rock... the jewel in the station casino crown.

but that's just me.

Red Rock is clearly the nicest Station. Hands down.
But Sunset isn't that far behind.
I enjoy it more because it's close to me.
Red Rock is a hike and a half.

Another opinion: In Henderson, Green Valley Ranch comes a lot closer to matching Red Rock's amenities than Sunset Station does. But I agree that Red Rock is the standard among the Station properties.

I've often wondered how comparable comps are between Station Casinos and strip casinos. I always felt that strip casinos were better comps but then again I was a tourist when I stayed there versus being a local and spending much less at Station.
