Again, another thread about being amazed that there is ANYTHING outside of the Strip... GEEZ people this is a city just like any other....

And also AGAIN people act like Henderson is way the hell outside of Las Vegas..... It is a suburb just like there are in any other city or town.....

From my prospective, it just seems odd that someone would travel to Las Vegas and stay at some random place out in Henderson.

As far as being random, none of these places are.... They get crowds of people from all over just like every other casino/resort.... Also when you travel out of town do you ONLY stay at the premiere places?? I doubt it....

Why stay out in Henderson?

The room rates are generally a lot lower than the Strip.
Ditto on the food and beverages which are generally very affordable at the locals place.
You can avoid the Strip crowds and all that traffic.
If your focus is NOT on the Strip, it is easier to get in and out of the properties.

I bought a house in Henderson three years ago. We go to sunset station every once in awhile. They have some decent restaurants and we always go there for thanksgiving

That brings up another question. I found the Station Casinos didn't pay very well. Is that just me?

Back when I was going, Aliante Station wasn't open. The Cannary was there, but I only used the Cannary for their movie theater, and occasionally their seafood buffet.

I think Aliante Station is a nicer Casino, however I prefer Henderson and the area Sunset Station is in. I thought there was more to do near Sunset Station than there was near Aliante Station.

I was never much of a gambler out there, so I couldn't give you a great answer on loose slots.

I'm not buy in this for a couple of reasons:

- You can usually find very reasonable room rates on the strip if you do some shopping around. There are always deals.

- If someone is contemplating staying in Henderson, they will almost certainly have a car. If they have a car, they can stay on the strip and take advantage of food deals at the locals joints.

- Part of coming to Vegas as a tourist is to join in the running carnival that is the strip. If you're staying off the strip, you,re either in your casino or in your car. The usually isn't too much to do that is walkable around the off stop casinos. Also you can stay on the Strip, and easily avoid the Strip traffic. Just use the parallel streets and side/back entrances.

No, that is YOUR vision of going to Las Vegas. If I want to see a running carnival. I drive down to any number of neighborhoods in Chicago.

I am going to have a car in Las Vegas PERIOD. That alone makes the Strip less convenient.

If you don't have a car, there's even less reason to stay off the Strip, unless you just want to stay at one resort.

FWIW, I always rent a car when I'm in Vegas, specifically so I'm not trapped in my hotel, or even to being on the strip. I have stayed off the strip. It was much more of a generic, non-Vegas-y experience.

The reason some folks may want to stay off the strip is to see other attractions outside of the strip plus get a feel of what normal life is living in LV. You would not believe how many people not from LV believe everyone lives there and goes there all of the time. They think you just party and gamble and eat 24 seven. lol. Most of them believe prostitution is legal and it cost next to nothing. They believe you just walk into a casino and get a job and it is always hot in LV. Believe me I am moving there soon and you would not believe the reactions and comments I received so far. I gave up explaining because some folks want to argue about it and they have never been there. I enjoy staying either place on or off the strip but my last two trips involved house buying so it was much closer to stay at a Station Casino and then I could go in to where ever I wanted to go on the strip. A GPS is a must doing this and it gave me a choice of what I wanted to see and do. So I agree you can get some good deals on the strip or Fremont ST. also. This is what I like about LV you have choices to fit your needs.

When I head to Las Vegas, it is generally for a week and the purpose is for relaxation.

We like to get a newer room and have done some of the better Station properties, Coast properties, the South Point, etc. And we like to do it on the trip.

I have a list of 50-75 good restaurants, about 90% off the Strip, that my foodie friends have recommended. We generally do a meal or two a day MAX. Lately, a lot of the restaurants have been on Spring Mountain Rd. as the SO is becoming more adventurous.

We generally have a list of 10-12 attractions that we would like to see while we are there. Attractions include plays, shows, cinema, etc. And many of them are off-Strip and geared toward locals.

Every trip includes at least three five mile walks and at least one is in or near Death Valley.

Every once in a while, we'll park at one of the Strip properties and do a little walking around. This year's adventures included City Center (not my cup of tea) and Wynn/Palazzo. It was an enjoyable walk through but we like to be as far away as possible from the action.

On vacation, I like to shop. It is something that I don't get to do at home as I work 60-70 hours per week. And when I shop, I don't need the high end places. Most of the places I like to go to are in the Henderson areas.

And of course, I think nothing of taking a side trip out of Las Vegas. In January, we flew out of Las Vegas on a Tuesday morning to Monterey, CA and back on Wednesday night. Why? I found a $35 OW on those dates. Seven days in Las Vegas and two in Monterey made - that makes for a great trip.

Next trip? Who knows? Maybe we'll stay out at that casino hotel near Boulder City. I would stay at Sunset Station, but NOT if it entails a $15/ night resort fee.

We usually go to the Henderson casinos, GVR, Sunset and Fiesta and then the water street triangle just because there are more friendly faces there and the food is sooooo much cheaper. Fiesta was just running a 3.99 breakfast, 4.99 lunch and a 5.99 dinner special at the buffet and you will NEVER find that on the strip. Plus locals places are a little more friendly from the gaming area also.
