It's very strange because LV is the only placed I'vd lived that I did not have problems with my asthma!! I think I'm the only person that says that!!

I was seriously asthmatic as a child. As an adult the only place I have had the problem is a couple of times in Florida. Pretty sure I am sensitive to a particular mildew. YMMV

But, I tend to think if it was going to be- humidity would be a bigger indicator of heat being an issue. But, knock on wood, they've done AWESOME this summer and the last stretch of time here in MD has been down right disgusting!!!
I'm not sure what you mean by clarification of "only bowling alleys through Casino" comment. If you are referring to my comment, what I said was that you usually have to walk through a casino to get to movie theaters or bowling centers. This is a fact, not something I made up, and based on my experience living in Summerlin for the past 4 years. There is one movie theater near my home that is not inside a casino. There may be bowling centers in other parts of town that are not inside a casino. If you're not bothered by the things that I had mentioned in my post, it shouldn't be an issue for you.

As far as doing outdoor activities anytime of the year like others mentioned in their posts, that would really depend on you and your family. I guess if your family enjoys biking, hiking, playing sports, or doing other outdoor activities in 100 plus degree heat 3-4 months of the year, then Vegas is the place for you.

Some will play table games, but that's because they enjoy the game, not because they are addicted to gambling. My friends who come up from CA tend to be far more interested in gambling. Just a counter opinion.

I'm surprised you would think Vegas has more materialism and greed than CA. OC is pretty much the materialism/greed mecca. I don't see it being any worse here than CA or practically any other metropolitan area in the USA.

I agree it's almost too hot to do anything from June-September. It didn't seem to stop us when we were kids though. I still rode my bike everywhere and spent a lot of time at the public pool. Most of my coworkers nowadays have pools and that's where their kids spend the majority of time in the summer.

People always complain about the heat, but I figure you can be hot part of the year, cold part of the year, or live in CA or Hawaii. Those are pretty much much your weather options in the USA

All that said, I love SoCal and would live there too if the economics of it worked out for me. I enjoy being able to take an occasional vacation and save money for retirement. I couldn't do that living in SoCal.
I was not implying that if you are exposed to the casino culture, you will grow up to be a gambler. What I meant was that I personally don't like to expose my children to that kind of environment.

I don't think anyone can quantify greed or materialism in any place. It is all based on observations and daily experiences. I lived in San Diego for over 20 years and did not encounter, nearly as many greedy, materialistic, superficial people as I have in Vegas. We can argue about your assessment of OC as "the materialism/greed mecca", but it's all subjective, so there's no point.

I have come across a lot of people like you who would move to SoCal if they could afford it. For me, a small, modest home close to the beach in SoCal is worth 10 times more than my big house with pool in Summerlin. There's a good reason cost of living is low in LV.

I have fifteen years in both and do not share your views. They are personal and should be taken as such. I don't even care for the coastal plain climate. Again individual view...and I do not believe the morals of my children were ruined by exposure to large breasts on billboards in LA which was claimed at the time. Most of the people I have met who want to move to So. CA have a Hollywood view that would swiftly be crushed by the reality. A two BR condo is a 2BR condo - whether it costs $50K or $500K. My personal view of the best option was the three or four years when we lived in Las Vegas and kept a reasonably nice boat in Long Beach. When we got jaded by the heat or the inland environ we would run over to Catalina. Note though Catalina is like Hawaii...only works for a couple of weeks.

My views are personal and I don't expect you or anyone else to share them. It's a big, free country with different climates and landscapes and you can choose to live where you're happy.

I'm not sure why a lot of people in Vegas equate Southern CA to LA. It's kinda like saying the whole LV is the strip. I'm actually not a big fan of LA and not planning to move there anyway. But since you brought it up, I'm not sure what you mean by "exposure to large breasts on billboards". Do you mean actual pictures of large breasts? ads for strip clubs? lingerie stores? plastic surgeons who perform breast implants? Whatever you mean by that, I still don't think LA comes even near sin city as far the number of billboards and public advertisement for strip clubs or summer pool parties where tops are optional and you can lose your tanlines...not that there's anything wrong with that. Las Vegas economy depends on this kind of stuff. No tourist comes to Vegas to enjoy its arts/cultural offerings, visit its natural wonders, outdoor activities, museums, amusement parks, etc.

A two BR condo is a two BR condo if you don't ever leave your condo.

Except for the people who come to see Red Rock Canyon, the Valley of Fire, enjoy our plethora of outdoor activities, see the best selection of concerts on the planet, or even visit a museum or two. Just because most people visit to fritter away their money doesn't mean EVERYBODY does.

Las Vegas is a good central base for exploring some of the best national parks this country has to offer. I'm no cheerleader for this town. I think my posting history bears that out. But your statement above is wrong.

Thanks for all the input everyone! Greatly appreciated. I don't think Vegas is the place for us after much research and lots of conversation. Thanks for all the feedback!!

Please forgive me as I am not yet sure how this works. This thread is almost 2 yrs old--so, are the answers the same for a family of 3 moving to Vegas (henderson perhaps?) Single mom, 48, nurse for 25 yrs and 2 teenagers middle schooler and high schooler. Wondering if henderson is still good or where? Will secure employment first of course. Wondering about schools, cost of living, rents, etc. Thank You for any information You may have.

I fit this description exactly. I visited once to attend a concert when the world renowned Andre Rieu had a concert stop there. The other couple of days I was out exploring the wonderful outdoor activities. I could care less about visiting the strip. I ONLY go for the shows and dining now and then.
