Smog is a mixture of fog and smoke. I think the humidity level is usually too low in LV for fog and temp and dewpoint need to be close to produce fog, usually within a degree or two max. I've wondered about this, it seems to me the restricted visibility usually coincides with wind, and is likely just dust being kicked up throughout the valley.

That's not smog. Per the NWS:

Quote:
Update...hazy sunshine around southern Nevada this morning as dust particles thrown into the atmosphere from strong winds yesterday over Inyo County and western Nevada settles out. Looks like north winds will be slightly stronger today so just sent out a quick update. No other changes done

There's plenty of ozone in the air as well. But you're right. It's mostly dust.

I use weather underground for this sort of thing because I can choose the station.

For instance, near the airport, there's a "moderate" amount of particulate matter (dust). It gets better as we move away from the city center. Out where I am, there's still dust in the air, but not nearly as much as in the center of the bowl.

For some reason, if we do have smog, it's most always in the Southern part (Henderson) of the valley. Is there some polluting industry out there causing it or does the smog simply migrate to that part of the valley?

It is the standard behavior of matter in a valley.. All valleys with human inhabitants are going to have smog on some days. The nature of the valley traps the air at a low level and it builds up.

Las Vegas seldom has real smog and it is almost always on calm days in the winter when the inversion layer gets down low and just lays there.

Get above 2100 feet and there is none.
