How old does a car need to be to no longer need omissions? While the new car does not need it, the smog check cost could be 2% of the car's value by itself.

And alternative-fuel vehicles are exempt. I don't have to bother with smog.

For the record, I keep my cars in good mechanical shape, even if they're not much to look at. Of course, the one unfortunate non-trivial aspect of older cars is fewer airbags, though the crash safety data within classes isn't hugely different once you cross the early-90s threshold of good crumble-zones and dual airbags.

Yes, 25yrs to not require emissions, though pre-1996 they do a tailpipe test, not the ECU test.

And the smog check fee is closer to 1.3% of the car's value, though I'm unclear why this is in any way a useful figure to consider since that one's a flat fixed cost no matter what you drive.

There's nothing wrong with driving older cars as long as they are maintained well. The only car I ever bought 100% brand new died after 5 years, yet I've had "POS" cars that will likely run forever.

I have heard that before from someone who bought a Dodge Neon brand new. Did you have the same car?

No, it was a Saturn. I've heard the same about Neon. Now that is what I would call a POS LOL

Saturns are usually good cars. I had one that was great, bought a second one and it died just after its 5th birthday.

What am I missing here? How do you come up with $80 total? Looks more like $107 to me.

Nice catch. The $80 total is correct; that last $36 line-item should be $9 (typo on my part). A little distressing that it took 38 posts before someone caught that.
