Wow! Cheap! Is this really all it costs? My car is a 2004. My current registration in Iowa will cost me $199. Add $30 if I decide to get the vanity plate I want.

THIS IS AN ESTIMATE ONLY. YOUR ACTUAL REGISTRATION FEES MAY BE

Thanks for the link, and the information. Just for anyone who's curious I used the estimator and plugged in a 2012 25k automobile and the estimator spit out $471. Sounds a bit high to me, but my guess is the savings in car insurance from what I would expect in the NE would likely cover the $40/mo in that example.

As long as that estimator is close to actual everyone can use it to determine their own cost and determine if they think it's expensive or not, Thanks!

Don't like it? Go political. Let the state legiscritter (and the candidates running against them) know that if they want your vote, they need to make registration just cover the cost of servicing DMV, not as a general purpose cash cow. If enough people push this, the fees will go down to something reasonable.

I just registered my new car this week and here are my fees:

Red Rock Canyon Plate: $35
Red Rock Canyon Plate Fund: $25
Prison Industry Fee: $1
Registration Fee - Passenger Vehicles: $33
Basic Gov Services Tax - Clark: $1,130
Supplemental Gov Services Tax - Clark: $282

Total: $1,506

When I registered the car I didn't come here and whine about the high fees because I can afford it; and like you, I moved here from a high income tax state and I realize that Nevada has to get their income from somewhere. (My last year in Maryland I paid over $13,000 in state and county income tax.)

But people do need to be made aware of the high registration fees when they move here or it could come as a bit of a shock and an unexpected expense for which they weren't prepared.

For you to belittle that warning just because you're happy tooling around town in a 1996 Altima is absurd.
Calling his car a POS is a bit harsh, isn't it? Not everyone can afford to or choose to drive a brand new car. Having lower licensing fees is a perk of an older car, IMO.

Yeah, it was uncalled for and I hereby apologize. I was just pissed that he started a new thread for the sole purpose of calling everyone who complains about high registration fees whiners just because he drives a 16-yr-old car and only pays $80.

I also agree with your statement that having lower licensing fees for older and/or cheaper cars is a nice perk. Even more, I believe it is entirely justifiable. I see no problem with people who drive expensive cars and can afford higher taxes subsidizing those that may not be able to.

I guess in some eyes that makes me a socialist.

$60 of your fees were also entirely optional. Sure, it's only 4% of the total. But still, $60 is a weeks worth of groceries.

I'm sure there's a point in there somewhere.

Well, I can see his point. If the estimator is to be believed, I'm going to be paying $130 more in my state than I would in NV. Seems cheap to me!

Live in a state which charges according to weight, NYS does so it does not matter what year your car or truck is you still get zapped. Lets face it no matter where you are they got us and then watch the states waste the money and then up the fees (tax) more.

Just another reason to drive an older car. I think mine was about $80.
