So after thinking about moving for years, I finally got approved for a mortgage and can afford something up to 200k or so. Looking at prices, it looks like I might be able to get something almost anywhere around Las Vegas for that amount. There's a couple of specific things I'm looking for that I need some help with. I'm disabled so I need a single story home and I'm hoping to be within walking distance to a local casino or bars or some kind of entertainment. Walking distance for me would be a mile or two with decent sidewalks. I'm looking for a house rather than a condo since I need to modify where I live to be accessible for me and a house will give me more options. I don't have children and I don't work, so schools and commuting times aren't concerns for me.

From doing a general search, finding single story homes doesn't seem like it'll be too hard. The hardest part will be finding a neighborhood I like. The first area that I've found that seems pretty good is 89135. It's got the Red Rock casino and a Lifetime Fitness which is what I go to where I am now. I've found some pretty nice places in my price range, but are there any downsides to the area?

Any other areas similar to 89135 I should look at?

Im not sure if that should be a search criteria though a real estate agent can pinpoint those types of houses for you. You wont want to walk a mile or two once the summer rolls around. You didnt mention if you are able to drive or not. If so, that makes all the casinos outside of the strip the same amount of time away really. There is not much difference between making the drive to red rock casino and adding a few minutes and going to aliante casino or sante fe station.
You could look at some of the new construction anywhere south of 215 and north of craig road, which is a humungous swath of land but you could have your home customized while its still being built as opposed to modifying something already built. Dont underestimate the heat. Plenty of single stories though and plenty of nice casinos dotted all over the valley.

There are lots of one stories here in the NW within your range (price and distance) of Aliante casino. We've got good sidewalks too!

I lived in Texas, Houston and Dallas, for about 6 years, so I know I up to about 105 doesn't really bother me. From what I can tell Las Vegas is only hotter than that for a few months which is better than where I am now where I can't walk anywhere for about 5 months because of the cold (although this winter has been incredibly warm).

I can drive, but it's somewhat annoying transferring in and out of my car. It'd be nice to have the option not to need to drive now and then on a nice day and still go out somewhere fun. I don't really have much criteria for a location since work and schools aren't an issue, so finding a place where I don't always need to drive is about all I can think of that might help me narrow a search. A few years ago, I think price might have restricted me as well, but it looks like you can find decent places everywhere around Las Vegas for under 200k.

I took a quick look at some listings in this area and they look really nice so I'll definitely consider it. Thanks.

Having experienced both, I can tell you that 105 degrees in Texas is infinitely more uncomfortable than 105 degrees in Las Vegas. It will get hotter than 105 here, but probably nothing you can't handle.

Lots of nice homes near Green Valley Ranch in Henderson (zip 89012). Bars and restaurants adjacent at "The District."

If you don't want to drive, Vegas is NOT going to be your optimal location. Doing most normal tasks will be orders of magnitude more difficult without being able to use a car easily.

Just an FYI Ulyssees,

most of the casino valets are very adept at assisting handicap people to and from their car. In particular I've noticed the off strip places have valets that are really good and caring in this regard.

That said, I totally understand why you'd want to have close access. The place I can think of at the moment is some new build places near Sams Town. Keep in mind that this isn't the greatest area. In rolling over to Sam's, you'll probably encounter a hooker every now and then. But unless its late at night, you won't get robbed or anything(get a box at the casino). And you also have access to low rolling Eastside Cannery which is also pretty nice. And theres a Walmart there...and an Albertsons down the road.

Something like this:

5455 CRIOLLO Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89122 | MLS# 1229036

or this:

5436 PALISADES QUAD Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89122 | MLS# 1222742

I don't agree though in SOME areas here that holds true. I live near Tropicana and Eastern (actually near Trop and Mcleod) And I am in walking distance of everything we could need. Grocery stores (several)...99 cent store, cellular phone dealers, Walmart, Goodwill, Savers, pharmacies, mechanics, restaurants, movie theaters, etc etc etc. I have a car, but if I didn't this area would be perfect. I am also about 200 feet from a main bus route and stop
