Nice work MacGeek!

I am thinking of going a different route, mostly because I have glass doors, so no way to pretend I'm standing there:
  • I think I am going to go with an FTP camera placed high (14 feet) and an external mic and speaker wired by the doorbell.
  • The camera will send an email and text message to my phone and gf's when it detects motion, including 5 pictures of the motion event
  • IPcam app used to check door on camera speak through to person
  • Same app will have view of garage cam. This cam can trigger a relay to open or close garage
The advantage to this route is mainly the cost. $85ish x 2 for the cameras (foscam 8908). This is the older pan tilt model, but the only one with the relay output. Another $15 to build the garage door opener relay in the garage. The app is $5, but I already use it for other networked cameras. Another $30 for the speaker and mic.

One other cost is for a DVR to record camera video, but I'm using an HP Touchpad running Android to do this (IPCam app again). Cost $150, but any existing device could do this and it is optional for door/garage duty.

One other thing for me is that UPS and FedEX drop the box, ring the bell, and run. This way I have a minor chance to give them instructions before they bolt.

Ours never ring the bell. Weight sensor? If you set it ten feet out on the sidewalk you'd be ready for them by the time they get to the door. That would freak them out.

Johnathan,

Do you hold classes on how to do all that? I'm pretty much a geek, but have never messed with any of that stuff.

Everything is on a UPS, and it all restarts in case of a power outage,
(I also can remotely log in and restart, tweak if needed)

I have no class

But If I am in town, I will be more then happy to show off the system, and help someone set up one.

How about one of those Motion detector beams, that when someone crosses the path and breaks the beam, it starts the sequence.

Jonathan
My bad, I did not state my planned setup clearly. Motion detection is a built in feature of the camera as is the emailing of the pictures that triggered the event.
