What is really good about where we live in Aliante, we have almost everything we need with no more than a 30 minute or less walk in all directions. Lots of shopping, banks, restaurants, a few bars, a casino, 2 grocery stores, Costco, a Super Walmart, gas stations, etc. The trail system within Aliante helps cut down on walking time, since we can take shortcuts through them.
Thats what I like about being right across the 95 from the Centennial Center shopping complex. I could walk in 15 mins to Wal-Mart, In-N-Out, Planet Nissan, Michaels, Office Depot, Petco, you name it

The shops along Durango between 215 and Elkhorn are 5 mins away as well driving time. Its great. I also have Target on the other side of 215 and 95 as well. Im also one block from Albertsons, and Vons is in the same plaza as Target

The only two stores that arent super close like that are Smiths (have one at Durango/95, other at Ann/Decatur <<my personal favorite, both are of equal distance) and Best Buy (either have to go to Lake Mead/95 or Decatur/215)

If I want a quiet shopping experience, occasionally I drive the extra distance to the Target at 215/N 5th St. Theres never much going on around there

I've lived in Vegas for ~15 months with no car and I have no intention of getting one. I use the bus on occasion, but my main mode of transportation is walking/jogging. I'm within 5 miles of all my shopping/entertainment needs. Just going grocery shopping doubles as my exercise so there's that

If you're not physically disabled, you don't need a car as long as you're willing to not be lazy.

Count me as one who thinks a car is unnecessary in Las Vegas. When I do bring one there (rather than fly in), I park the car at my condo and just use public transportation and taxis.

The only place in Las Vegas I can think of where a car would be unnecessary would be if you lived near Maryland and Flamingo which is an EXTREMELY bad area. Everything is along the perpetual traffic jam that is Maryland Parkway

There is Vons, Best Buy, Barnes and Noble, Albertsons, CVS, Walgreens, the 99c Only Store, McDonalds, Burger King, The Blvd Mall, Sunrise Hospital, the strip being 2 miles away. I could go on all day

It really all depends where you live and how much of a hurry you are in. If I lived closer to Eastern I would use it more often. Where I am in Seven Hills it is a 35 minute walk just to get to a bus. Once you get on the bus at Eastern you can get anywhere pretty easy. Some of the buses even have free wifi now and most you can bring a bike.

I just looked at the map and was surprised to see that LV is actually north of Albuquerque but, of course, it's the difference between high desert and low desert that we're talking about. More like Las Cruces there I should think. Yeah, that's HOT! Something to think about, definitely.
I lived in Albuquerque for a while too, and the thing we like most about it is the mild weather compared to Las Vegas. It never gets nearly as hot in Albuquerque as it does here. And it never gets as cold here as it does in Albuq. Reno and Albuq. are more alike weather-wise. Don't remember if I was ever in Las Cruces or El Paso in the summer, but imagine the weather is similar to ours.

But do you go shopping? Doctor visits? Visit friends in other parts of town? Job searching? Need to go to a government office for anything? Pick up someone at the airport, or take your aging MIL to get glasses? As a visitor you probably don't live like we do. For everyday life in Las Vegas, a car is the most important thing to have. You could live without one, but ask anyone who has to get along without a car everyday of the year if they like it.

Buzz, I see tons of people in the Race and Sportsbook everyday that survive with just a bus pass. Except they don't visit Doctors, Dentists or do much shopping. They certainly don't job search and usually just try and steal a pair of glasses when they need some. The only reason they would talk to a MIL would be for a loan. Come to think of it they don't bathe much either.

If you live in a climate where if you walk 5-10 minutes and your underwear is soaked from sweat you need a car with A/C.. I think I'll invent a man bra for the family jewels because I know in that heat they must hang lowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. LOL..

110 degrees and out walking. They don't make humans like they did back in the old days.. This is 2011 people are soft today.. Get on the bus or make the payments..
