Hello,
I will be moving to LV in May (just in time for the HOT weather) from Minneapolis and have been reading all the forums with much interest. I haven't seen much on public transportation. I don't know where I will land yet, but was thinking about Boulder City or Spring Valley. I have a car and plan to drive in, but was wondering if there are park & ride spots as you get into town. Working on the strip at a casino in some capacity is where I plan to start.

I haven't heard much comment on Spring Valley either. I've googled Spring Valley - it sounded like a nice place. Is this is a desirable location for someone going alone with moderate means?

Thanks in advance for your comments!

Spring Valley is a Clark County Town of about 150,000 folk. It offers reasonable middle class living. Actually it is pretty much interchangable with most of the west side and the south east quadrant. Boulder City is more distant and is relatively expensive. BC to the strip is a significant commute.

You can find out about public transport at -

The thing called Maxx is a commuter mass transit deal.

Other than some buses that run up and down the strip, and some that run in from other areas of town (usually along the main arterials, and often requiring a number of changes to really get anywhere), there's no public transportation in Vegas. I can't recall ever seeing a park-n-ride either- the town is too small (still) to really have people driving to to a parking lot to hop a bus to work (it's not like NJ commuters going into NYC). If you're going to get in the car to go to the parking lot, you're going to just drive to work.

I agrtee somewhat but you go too far. There is a pretty good sized bus system hauling over 100,000 a day. If you work on the strip and pick your home correctly it is quite a viable construct.

There are however vast areas with no service and getting from one section of town to another is pretty hard...you pretty much have to go to the strip and then back out.

I am also unaware of any park and ride other than the one on 95 for people going to the test site.

There is a park and ride at the South Strip Transfer Terminal at Gilespie and Warm Springs. We have a good transportation system, I use it everyday to get to and from school as well as to get to the Strip, or the mall, or wherever else I need to go to. Spring Valley, IMO, depending on where you live, will have the least amount of access. Spring Valley, the neighborhood, is older, but west of Rainbow is a better area of the town, unless its north of Desert Inn between Jones and Buffalo.

Thanks for the replies. I'm new to this forum - just trying to do my research before I head out there. The nagging questions I have all have to do with where to live. Neighborhoods, services, commute, shopping, etc. I currently live in Minneapolis, not a subburb. But I'm kinda thinking that suburbia will be a better fit for me since I'm kind of a chicken! I want to be able to get to and from work without too much hassel. This is probably a dumb question - If most people drive into work, are there big parking ramps at the casinos? I've been to Vegas five times in the past six years but don't remember seeing that kind of thing. But then I wasn't actually looking for it either. If you do park in the parking ramp, anybody know what the average cost is to park in one for 8 hours?

Thanks again!

I have worked in some of the casinos here, and they always provide employees parking lots, sometimes a considerable walk from the actual employee entrances. They do not charge for the employee parking lots, and in fact they always threatened disciplinary action if employees were caught parking anywhere else on property during their shift. I am sure Human Resources at your future employer would be able to explain their particular policies regarding parking.
The only time I have ever seen hourly (timed) parking is in the downtown area of Las Vegas, and I suspect that might not apply to casino employees in that area.

One more heads up regarding that, when I was a new arrival in Las Vegas a couple decades ago, the Strip was the first place I looked for casino jobs and the standard answer was my references looked good, but since I had no casino experience they were going to pass on hiring me. I learned quickly it was a different story in regard to the off strip (often called 'Local') casinos. By that I am referring to chains like Station, Charlies and Coast ~ although ever since Coast was bought out by Boyd I hear through the grapevine they are not doing any hiring at the moment because they have former Stardust employees to absorb. Hope this was some help.

If you haven't been off the strip on your trips, you've got some major research to do. When you talk about "suburbs", bear in mind that Vegas doesn't really have "suburbs" in the traditional sense of the word like the "suburbs" outside of NYC, Boston, or the like. The city just kind of "continues on" seemingly endlessly from the strip out.

While there's some variety in the masterplanned areas like Summerlin and Green Valley, for the most part the entire valley is just one continuous blob of subdivision after subdivision, with very little to separate them or make them stand out. Outside Minneapolis you may drive a few miles "between" towns to get to the outlying suburbs- unless you're looking at living in Overton, Pahrump, or the like, that's not happening in Vegas.
