The trick is to walk away when you are up. You will definitely lose over time if you keep putting your "winnings" back in the machine and keep playing.

Stick and move. Stick and move.

Yes, stick and move is all very well unless you have a wife who loves a particular machine
like I have. It's in the Golden Gate. It's got three characters called Goldie, Ritzy and Chrissie.
When you get three piles of gold coins it plays a tune, you get a wink from Chrissie and a
few free spins. Can't get her off the damn thing win or lose - mainly lose!

As a player you are still at the mercy of the RNG which may or may not be slanted in the houses favor.

like i said previously... I choose to not play these machines.

the main reason I love playing against a live opponents versus a computer program is that you can play a strategy that is far from what is considered "optimal" and still win. As a matter of fact, playing in a fashion that is characterized as "optimal", is one of the surest ways to loose against really talented players that can spot playing these characteristics without having to see the hole cards.
And do you think gaming control is going to let a manufacturer release machines where the RNG eprom is not random.

A skilled poker player is not merely a good bettor. A skilled poker player is thinking about a multitude of ever-changing variables which include:
  • Starting hand odds
  • Pot odds
  • Implied odds
  • Table position
  • Position in Tournament
  • Pace of game
  • Opponent's tendencies
  • Opponent's tells
  • Big blinds remaining

The list goes on and on, and does include “betting strategy”, but one thing for certain is that betting strategy is not the most important thing to a professional level poker player. Starting hands and table position are clearly the top two concerns for a good player. That is a fact.

Incorrect. There are machines that are as high as 10/7 that pay over 100%; in fact, I was playing one yesterday at Red Rock. There are also 10/6 VP games.

"Neurosis?" I think you inferred a LOT from my post that just wasn't there.

I'll explain again, with more detail, so you can better understand.

I only occasionally play slots, for a few minutes at a time, and only when I'm taking a smoke break from playing cards. In that few minutes, I might stick a $5 bill in a $0.25 2-coin-max machine. I don't expect to get it back. I would like to get as much of it back as possible, though, and if I get back more, great!

If I stick that $5 into a Megabucks machine, it's two pulls of the handle and *poof* - it's gone before I've taken the second drag off my cigarette. If I put it into a non-progressive quarter machine, I can play that $5 for the entire time I'm smoking, even if I don't hit ANYTHING for the duration of that short session.

The fact that I'm playing a non-progressive machine increases the odds that I'll hit a couple of smaller wins in that few minutes, lessening my loss. I might (and have) even hit something decent, and walk away ahead. That possibility would be virtually extinguished if I were playing a progressive machine.

That's pretty much my entire point - I never claimed that there was any "system" to playing slots or anything, but there are choices you can make which will decrease your losses. Not playing the progressive machines is one of them. Not playing them at all is another...

Your point is valid. The longer the sampling period, the more likely you are to arrive at the mean. In other words, the longer you play a casino game or machine, the more the odds favor the house.

This is why I suggest playing the $5 machines in the high limit area instead of the penny machines out on the floor. It will limit your play time, which is better for you.

So losing $100 in 30 minutes (or less) is favorable to taking a few hours to do so? I assume you toss the entertainment value out the window. Don't misunderstand me; I don't play slots. I find them to be a complete waste of time, but I know a lot of people who seem to derive great pleasure from watching them do whatever it is they do.
