While I am a fan of Priceline, I have NOT had a lot of good luck getting significantly lower rates from Priceline. If I cannot save more than $20/week, I would rather have the option of returning the car earlier, if need be.

The best rates I have been booking come from Alamo. I would recommend signing up for their "INSIDERS CLUB" e-mails each week.

Kayak has never yielded any better than the general travel websites - Travelocity, Orbitz, etc. Ditto for carrentals.com.

I have always found that those sites yield rates that are higher than the lowest one on teh rental car web sites.

In all of my searching and compairing "booking sites" (Orbitz, Expedia etc) vs. rental car sites, I am finding the booking sites to be lower every time.

Best way to save is to keep checking daily and see what the new rates are...they can change daily and even MORE than daily..

For example, my next trip to Vegas is the beginning of May...when I first looked for rental car prices back in January, best I could find was $179 for a 3 day rental with Budget...in early Feb. I rebooked with Budget for $103 for the same rental. Mid February I rebooked with Payless for $59. If it goes lower, I'll rebook again...Today, the best rate available from anyone is $103..

Last week I knocked a 2-day rental down from $105 to $58. It really pays to check out the rates once a day..

I'll suggest trying Car Rental Savers, car rental coupons and car rental discounts! Orbitz does not list Dollar or Thrifty and some other rental car companies so you sometimes can't see what the actual lowest rate is among the major companies there...
