So we just moved into our rental home, which we have for a year while we look at neighborhoods in which to buy. First night actually in the place and we head out to the patio to relax at about 8:00 last night. Immediately smell something burning---kind of reminded me of the smell of burning leaves from back east. It gets stronger....and stronger still. We decide to take a walk to investigate.
We head over to Cliff Shadows Parkway (near W. Alexander) and cars are stopped everywhere, police and fire cars all over. THE MOUNTAIN WAS ON FIRE!
Well, we had never seen anything like that before. We talked with neighbors who are all heading up the street out of curiousity just like we were. They reported never seeing it before either, although I'm sure there have been fires on the mountains before just not in recent memory I guess.
What a welcome to our new place!!!

I thought I was imagining things when I smelled smoke last night. Then it was on TV this morning. It's not unusual in our mountains to have forest fires. In this case, given the location, I believe it's a brush fire. Happens every year, but most of our forest fires are not so dramatic as they are in California for some reason. The fire danger has been very high this summer, and the Forest Service warning signs are posted all over the place at Mt. Charleston. No campfires are allowed, so if you plan to cook it has to be on a grill or campstove.
We also can count on the occasional swamp fire at the base of Sunrise (Frenchman) Mountain.
