Public transportation projects appear to be moving forward (albeit ever so slowly). What else could/should be done to insure Las Vegas's continued vitality? What tactics/damage control would you employ to maximize potential if you had the authority??

Specific suggestions targeting:

1. State budget deficit
2. Unemployment
3. Foreclosures
4. Hotel Room Overcapacity

Ummm...close your eyes for 5 years?

I'd say install enlightened government which actually plans in anticipation of need as opposed to reacting to it, but that is just wishful thinking. The voters have repeatedly spoken that they don't mind things like building roads only when the people overrun them with traffic and those who invest big money in any kind of project have shown time and again there is usually one visionary and then 50 me-too fools who race in only after the best returns have long been made.

A tourism based economy is always going to be boom bust. It's just the nature of the industry. When the economy is down, the easiest thing to cut out is vacation.

Diversifying the economy is rather difficult.

Las Vegas has proven over and over that when people are depressed they want a getaway like Las Vegas to cheer them up. Tourist numbers are good considering.

As for foreclosures, the banks don't care. They short sale your home and the government makes up the difference to them by giving them our tax money. Take that away, and make them obey the laws we have now, and make them negotiate with homeowners honestly while trying to find ways to let people keep their homes (and dignity); problem solved.

1. State budget deficit

http://www.lasvegasgleaner.com/minin...tion.facts.pdf With all the tax loopholes in the system, mining companies are raping our land and paying next to nothing. 1/2% tax on mining companies operating in Nevada is considered very low compared to other states.

Gaming Companies are investing billions overseas but when it comes to paying a little bit more, giving back more to the community in NV, gaming companies will claim they are not making any money.

2. Unemployment

Invest in clean renewable energy sources, at Nellis Air Force Base we already have one of the largest Solar Energy Plants in the United States. Wind Farm can be established as a renewable energy source in NV, surprisingly I dont think NV has any Wind Farms. Clark County need to attract investors in these type of endevours.

Get Hollywood to do more filming/production in Clark County, New Mexico and New York makes more money than NV with their "Hollywood friendly government". CA is next door to NV and yet New Mexico and New York gets the bulk of Hollywood work.

Invest in Education to keep our people competitive but instead cut backs in Education is decimating it.

3. Foreclosures

There will be more foreclosures coming if Clark County does not improve employment conditions. See #2.

4. Hotel Room Overcapacity

Gaming companies greed has caused the overcapacity in Las Vegas, they are claiming to not making money and yet they keep buying up properties left and right. Out of State investors don't stand a chance against these greedy casino operators.

Give back more to the visitors who spend money in their properities but instead they nickel and dime visitors and charge outrageous hotel room rates. During the last Electric Daisy Carnival, room rates tripled/quadrupled. A great way of saying we want you back!!!

Anything that promotes small businesses. Thats it. I know a couple people that are in the middle of starting up a small/medium business and it seems like they have to jump through a ring of fire just to get things going. One is a restaurant and the other is a personal trainer gym. The crazy zoning, permits, permissions...etc. Financing is not even the issue.

I feel that this is important because not everyone will or should have to depend on working in a major casino to feel successful. Small business is where the wealth will start to grow. If small businesses grow, then they can hire and so on....Cant have everyone working under one roof(casino)

Even if Vegas was at less than 1% unemployment with 99% of the locals working on the strip....that would not be a good look. If the strip had any type of hardship then there goes the unemployment.
