I think a lot of us moved here because we wanted to. For us, low cost of living is gravy. It's weather that drew us, and weather, low cost of living, the music scene, and the people to whom we've grown close are what's keeping us here.

That's fine. Move here for whatever reasons compel us.

But if gaming is our ONLY industry, we are going to suffer every time there's a recession. And I think we're going to have more and more recessions, not less and less. We would do well to diversify while things are relatively good, economically.

Seems to me it would be a no-brainer to go with medicine -- build a world-class teaching hospital/medical school and work VERY hard on retention. We could do the same for tech and engineering. But we won't. This is a shortsighted city. We won't invest in ourselves, so why should anyone else?

Cali got whacked as badly as Vegas during the recession. They have plenty of diversification.

Las Vegas was at the bottom of every bad list -- house price decline, houses in foreclosure, unemployment. Houses in the Bay Area went up at that same time. Why? Diversification.

I think there has been quite a bit of diversification. People want something and they want it done in 2 years, but it just doesn't work that way.

Right along with Southern California, which is pretty diversified

No, one particular industry - Tech. Tech is their gaming. Without tech, there wouldn't be too much going on up there (maybe some finance in SF.) So maybe their one trick pony has a better trick than gaming. But much of the Tech industry started in NorCal. It's not like they lured it in. And if it could be lured out, every metro area in every state would be trying (and basically is, including LV.)

Northern California has always been a innovative and diverse place.

Medicine-with a world-class teaching hospital/medical schools will take tons upon tons of money (and time) to have a class.

There's no need for you to worry. If you don't want Las Vegas to diversify, the solution is easy -- do nothing. Because Las Vegas isn't going to diversify.

We won't even fund libraries, let alone a decent medical school. We are in absolutely no danger of being anything other than a one-trick pony.

Everyone forgets the economic impact that Nellis AFB, Creech AFB and the Testing Range have on the Las Vegas economy. They're over 12k Airmen and DOD civilians working at these bases. Plus over 1000 personnel on TAD orders on any given day from all over the world. Over 30k retired military living in Las Vegas. The overall economic impact from the military in Las Vegas is over $5 billion per year (info provided by Financial Analysis Office at NAFB). The military impact has been understated wrt the diversification in Las Vegas.
