I agree. Recently went to the Riveria. Now, it may hold "old time charm" but it smells and there was no one there to speak of. As I walked through, I thought to myself that this place was "it" one day. We had free buffet coupons and I don't think I would go back again, free or not. Yuck!!!!! First clue should have been a Saturday evening and not a soul in line.

Now, with Detroit, there are buildings still standing that are much older than that, but they did not have the "onslaught of customers" wearing them out. (and they are barely standing!) Nobody comes to visit Detroit unless they are coming for family or a particular event. They are all fleeing Detroit, even if they do still stay in MI.

In Vegas, with the new casinos (and all pretty much newer than Riveria)there is too much to compare it to. Tourists want to see the new and flashy. They just need to gamble more!

That's too bad about Reno. I liked the place.

It's my home city and home state region. There are almost ZERO similarities whatsoever - except the very superficial loose connection that they are one major industry towns.

But, that doesn't make the two cities identical by any stretch.

Detroit is a seriously crime-affected urban monstrosity ravaged by crack cocaine and other epidemics. Empty streets and racial politics, and racial divisions. Serious long-term economic decline, etc. Almost irrepairable deteriation of much of it's housing, etc.

Additionally, while Vegas had housing going for a half million dollars and now going for much lower. Detroit DIDNT have that at all. They were continuously at very cheap housing prices of well under $50,000, and still no one was coming in. They didn't experience the housing bubble. It's popularity went away over a half century ago.

Additionally, Vegas is a popular place for retirees, Californians, New Yorkers, international people, etc. It also has a great climate in a very agreeable part of the United States, surrounding by national parks. It'll still continue to attract people for a long time to come.

Detroit, on the other hand, is in the middle of a very large region experiencing drastically large numbers of people leaving their part of the country....leaving behind dilipitation and failed economies, and everything else.

The future of Las Vegas seems incredibly optimistic and one of continued interesting change, and interesting speculation.

Detroit is reeling from a very long 'nightmare' of immense problems, with a slight hope for a slightly better future. But, the cards are heavily stacked against it.

Las Vegas seems to have all the cards in its favor, and unless someone with a 2-9 offsuit can beat J-J with heads up all-in pre-flop, this is only a small bump in the road due to excessive (popularity) growing pains, than anything else.

With Detroit, the best of Detroit is long gone, and would need to mightily improve it's 2-9 hand against a J-J to become the city it once was again. Meaning it probably wouldn't happen, unless some incredibly divine circumstances interjected somehow.
What "divine circumstances"? Armageddon?

Couldn't help but see this thread. And this comment. Have you been to Detroit burbs??? There are mansions all over the place, some of the richest burbs in America actually. Another comment I read saying noone visits Detroit unless it's for family is BS. While it may not be one of the top tourist cities (like Vegas) it still brings in 16 million tourist a year and is about 10 percent of the metro areas economy. But that is all beside the point. This is about the housing market. Which I don't think makes any city like another just because they share similar problems. However, I do notice Vegas does have alot of problems that are similar to Detroit's... but the difference is Detroit's (and many older cities) problems are usually more extreme. Detroit's biggest problem is our world class city leaders. The corruption in Detroit is stomach turning sick. And the decisions that they make most of the time is so idiotic that they couldn't maintain a cornfield. Priorities are all over the place. I couldn't tell you how many people I heard say "I would move to Detroit but I can't deal with the city government, they don't got a clue what their doing". I'm hoping they will all be replaced pretty soon. I doubt Vegas will go threw the things Detroit is trying to recover from anytime soon. That's why I hate dumb ass titles like that, extreme, off the wall exaggerations that most likely will never become reality. Two totally different cities that are hardly comparable.

That was me about the visiting for family. It was a generalized statement, sorry. But...16 million tourists a year? Not just for Detroit. You are including the whole Metro Detroit. That includes quite a bit more than just Detroit. But, you are right, it isn't about tourism. Michigan, on the whole, does a great job with tourism. It is a beautiful state with plenty to see and do.

I agree on the city government. But, it is up to the people to vote these bozos out! A city that kept Coleman Young and that top idiot, Kwame in office, needs help understanding what is good for their city. So, good luck with that. Historically, it hasn't been too effective!

Marvin...you are young, seem smart and well versed on these things....how about running!!!

The list I saw they were counting entire metro areas I believe. Metro Detroit is pretty huge, especially when including Windsor across the river. It is also spread out like LA, things are all over the place. Which could be good if your living there because your not far from something no matter where you are but then again it's an inconvence when you have to use the freeway to get everwhere and waste gas money. But your right, it's alot of things I haven't explored yet in this state.

Yes, it is embarrassing to have such foolery occur. I wasn't alive for the Coleman Young era but as for Kwame. I can't take any political leader who is putting out rap mixtapes seriously. I like hip hop and all but it just had to be Detroit that has a "hip hop mayor". The city leaders turn down a light rail proposal and make more police and EMS cuts but want a robocop statue. City leaders acting ignorant and childish. It makes us look like a joke. Ill be glad when this clown show is over, the circus acts they continue to preform downtown is embarrassing. Funny but embarrassing.

Lol thanks but not my line of work. Don't know if I could handle that much pressure. Not to mention the leaders are at a political war with eachother and the state. Snyder might as well move his office to downtown Detroit too. He will fit right in.
