I am currently a Fire Fighter/Paramedic in the city of Chesapeake, VA, in the next year or so my wife and I are contemplating a relocation and Las Vegas is in the running as a possiblity. We have visited numerous times and really enjoyed it, being east coasters our whole lives the change in scenary has always been nice. I know that the luster of the downtown area would die very quickly, but both of us being outdoor enthusiasts I think we would enjoy the surronding area, and avoid downtown like most locals seem to do.
Currently we have no children but are trying to change that, just haven't managed to make it happen yet. Our greatest concern is of course brining up children in a large city like that, Vegas may not be large to some people but compared to Virginia Beach it is. I gather from reading other posts that the better areas to live in have been:

Henderson/Green Valley (southeast)
Summerlin (west/northwest)
Southwest (south of Charleston, west of Buffalo)
Centennial Hills
Anthem/Seven Hills: south valley and east of I-15
Mountains Edge/Southern Highlands: south and west of I-15

This post however was done back in 2006, does it still hold true today? As I mentioned we are most concerned with a safe area with good schools. Also if anyone can reccomend a good, not pushy or impatient, realtor I would appreciate it. This would be our second home, selling our first here in VA, and we know what we are looking for in a home so someone who is patient is a must. I should also add that I currently commute 30 minutes to work so living in an outlaying city and driving in would be no big deal so long as I didn't have to go much over 30 miles or so, if it meant a much better area?
