I have a Whirlpool Gold Gas Range/Stove that, I believe, needs a small solenoid valve, or the main valve assembly toward the bottom of the unit.

I called a distributor and was quoted $150 for the main valve, which is more than lots of people are selling perfectly good lightly used ranges for around town... I'd rather just fix this one, though.

Anyone know where to get appliance parts cheaply? Are there such things as pick-and-pull appliance "junkyards" as there are for cars?

Appliance part center 501 eastern...right north of the 95.

Note this is the classical "old hardware store" type part center. If you walk in and play the role well they will tell you how to fix almost anything and jury rig a fix if the right part is no longer available.

Note if you call and ask for a specific they will quote it high if they got it.

Love the place. Wisdom comes from odd directions.

And life is not fair...

Thanks for the info - They're actually the ones I called earlier who quoted me $150 for the part (which I'm not going to pay). I'm not entirely sure we're talking about the same part, though, so I'm going to head down there tomorrow with the busted solenoid in hand. So we'll see - maybe what I need is cheaper. I'll also try to negotiate, because I really will just buy another unit completely for $60 off Craigslist instead of paying $150 for the part.

Went to this place in person. They were NO help, and extremely overpriced. I ended up not taking their advice, and fixing the problem myself for $7. Their solution was $210.

They took no interest in the problem, and didn't bother to understand what I was trying to accomplish.

I was hoping it would be that old style hardware store that you referenced (which I'm very used to from living in the Northeast), olecapt, but it is not. These guys sell new parts from their distributors, don't offer good DIY solutions, and furthermore, they don't even stock general purpose hardware or parts - just the expensive new stuff from the manufacturers.

Very disappointed.

Too bad. They used to be...I considered them an excellent source for advice...the only one in town. So I guess we are stuck with the internet unless someone finds a new one.

Making money screws up all sorts of good things.

The only other thing that might work is the swap meet has a set of itinerant repair men. I will check next time there and see if there is any part availablity. Maybe though the only stuff avaiable is scavenged...
