Hi all!

I just moved to Las Vegas in the Summerlin area and I was considering installing a small (maybe 6x6 ft) patch of grass in the back yard for my 2 dogs. We moved from Colorado where they had access to a huge back yard full of grass and so now I feel bad with the desert landscape backyard we now have.

My question is what are the rules surrounding installing grass? I found on the Las Vegas water site the watering schedule and the rules for installing grass in NEW homes, but I was wondering if the rules differ for existing homes.

Can anyone offer any insight on this?

And last, are there any good dog parks in the Summerlin area?

Thanks in advance!

I'm pretty sure you can plant all the grass you want, but the dogs will still go wherever they feel like going. Rocks don't bother my dogs, especially the small ones. As far as dog parks there are lots of them. What part of Summerlin are you in? Here are the parks listed within the city limits: Find Parks and Facilities
Barkin Basin is the biggest but not much shade, and one of my dogs is allergic to something there. I suspect it is the tons of weed killer that they spray.
I don't like Centennial Hills. High grass hiding do do. Not big enough anyway. We've been going to the Kellogg-Zaher because it's lighted, and it's too hot right now to go in the daytime. It's just about the right size too.
Another one we like for the shade and convenience is at Woofter Park on Rock Springs and Vegas Drive.

You aren't supposed to let your dogs run loose at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, but we do when there aren't too many people and other dogs....and we don't see the Park Police hanging around. You can go beyond the developed part into the desert and let them run too. I've never seen a snake out there, but I'm sure there are some, and snakes and dogs don't mix, so be careful. I live off of Charleston by Red Rocks Casino. Also, one of my dogs is a 4 pound Yorkie, so are the dog parks small dog friendly?

Your dogs urine will most likely ruin the grass, especially female dogs.

Red ROCK (no 'S').

The dog parks are divided into big dog areas and small dog areas. Some of them, maybe most, have three areas. One is usually closed while the grass recovers, so they switch them around now and then. I seldom see any fights. Dogs are very social animals and they have their own ways of setting up the pecking order. Just turn them loose and they'll work it out. There are almost always two gates to go through so that dogs can't run out. Take their lease off inside between the gates. Problems between dogs usually happen when one or both are on a leash. I think they feel trapped and threatened, so they lash out. People who keep their dogs on a leash in the park with other dogs off leash are asking for trouble. Dogs want to play, but I see people that don't know their dog interferring with its play by yelling at them for every little dog thing they do. Let 'em run and just chill. They won't hurt anybody.

Feel free. Fertiiize around any damage. If you have room make it bigger. It is no more trouble. up to 20x20.

There is a dog park of the active kind at Washington and Buffalo just off Summerlin Plwy. There is another at Tenaya and Alexander. And a third on Smoke Ranch west of 95.

Goodluck with your backyard situation, I don't have a dog but I deal with dog feces on my side yard because of careless pet owners, same with cats. I hate irresponsible pet owners.

When taking your dogs for a stroll, Red Rock Canyon and the Red Springs area are nice. Not far from Summerlin are two beautiful large parks in Spring Valley, both have fenced in dog parks, The Desert Breeze Park and Spring Valley Park. Another area for you to take your pets for a walk is the Angel Park Trail System. The trails connect Bruce Trent Park/Las Vegas Sports Park, Kellog-Zaher Sports Complex, Westcliff Transit Center, Angel Park Trailhead and Angel Park South. This trail will also connect with the under-construction Tivoli Village. Enjoy the neighborhood and PLEASE pick up after your pets.
