I believe this is true and the unemployment is just the tip of the iceberg. I can't tell you how many people I know now who are working 80 hours a week at multiple part time jobs, with no benefits, and they still don't make enough to live.

How many? How about an estimate.

If someone works 80 hours a week, even at minimum wage, and can't live, perhaps they need to re-examine their lifestyle.

That said, of course, the job market here is terrible. I recently filled a low paying position ($30,000/year) and had 90+ resumes faxed over within 2 days of posting nothing but a Craigslist advert. Some applicants were incredibly overqualified. I'm not exposed to the perspective of the job-seeker, as I own a small business with very low turnover, but that response really brought things home to me. Last time we ran a similar ad in 2005 for a $30k/year job, there was virtually no interest.

That makes no sense at all. I only make $9.50 an hour with 40 hours a week and have a surplus of $500+ each month. I am fully on my own with no government or family help. The people you know are obviously terrible at managing their finances. Please do not take that as an insult, but I am only being honest. If I was getting 80 hours a week even at the minimum wage of $7.55 I would be living the high life.

The ratio of unemployedpen positions is one thing, but you also have to ask what types of open positions does the LV area have to offer? Many of the jobs in and around Vegas are just that: jobs. Many of these 'jobs' offer little in the way of advancement or future opportunities with new employers.

I agree with LIS123.

There are still many jobs in Las Vegas. Whether you have the qualifications to apply or not is another thing.

And, I do not talk about jobs required no skills or no college education.
